Would you be willing to pay more for your TV licence to ensure it stays free for over 75s?

I blinking would.

Angry

I know it's be a administrative impossiblity to achieve, but volunteering to pay an extra £5/£10 per year? Could it work?

OP posts:
Bufferingkisses · 10/06/2019 18:21

I'm confused as to why everyone is buying into this idea that anyone over 75 is poor? Plenty of the over 75 age group are actually quite well off. Why do they need subsidising just because they always have been?

Those on pension credits obviously are poorer but they are not affected. What is wrong with support going where it is needed and not where it isn't?

Babdoc · 10/06/2019 18:23

I blinking wouldn’t- and I’m a pensioner myself!
Op, the present generation of pensioners is the wealthiest in history. We had cheap mortgages, student grants instead of loans, and invested at a time when returns were massive. We have tons of equity in our houses.
You’re asking the young generation to subsidise our tv licences? Why?
The poor young generation who are struggling with huge student debts, massive mortgages, unaffordable childcare? Why the hell should they?
You could just about make a case for increasing the state pension to cover the cost of a licence, but you’d have to make it taxable, so only the poorer pensioners benefit from it.

Bythebeach · 10/06/2019 18:25

Really? Why? Loads of over 75s have massive disposable income.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/06/2019 18:26

Nope. Absolutely not.

Its farcical that well off over 75s get it for free as it is.

Ffsnosexallowed · 10/06/2019 18:26

No I wouldn't. The over 75s I know have more money than me!

Redglitter · 10/06/2019 18:27

Absolutely not. Most of the pensioners around here could buy & sell me

S0CKS · 10/06/2019 18:27

Sorry but I wouldn't..
For pensioners who only get the state benefits etc i would but the oap who has plenty of disposable income sorry no.

MaximusHeadroom · 10/06/2019 18:28

Nope.

I would however pay more if it was means tested and people who couldn't afford it got it for free. I just don't think age is a good way to measure that. Same with the bus pass. If you live in London that can amount to thousands of pounds a year saved based purely on age and not means.

My DM is 80, has 4 times our monthly income and no mortgageHmm

Kintan · 10/06/2019 18:28

Everyone I know over 75 is loaded (well compared to people in the generations below)! This was the generation who had final salary pensions, and bought houses when prices weren’t out of proportion with salaries.

Starlight456 · 10/06/2019 18:29

I would prefer bbc cut there budget .

How many bbc channels do we need.

Cut the salaries of those at the top.

If I was to pay additional for anything it would to increase the care the elderly need .

I would be happy if the scrapped the licence and introduced advertising

SushiGo · 10/06/2019 18:29

Er, no.

I'm pleased that it's free for those on pension credit, as that seems fair, but no I don't want to be paying the TV licence for families much wealthier than us!

Readytogogogo · 10/06/2019 18:29

I agree with it being means tested, not as a universal benefit.

Fillypants · 10/06/2019 18:30

Not a Freakin chance. Neither would I pay the TV tax myself. Extortion!

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 10/06/2019 18:30

No. Free licenses should be income based. My DPs and MIL are pensioners and are loaded.

hugoagogo · 10/06/2019 18:30

Hmm, not sure about this.
I come across plenty of well off pensioners in my job, so that probably skews my perception, but I am not sure if the blanket free tv licence is a cause worth fighting for.

InfiniteSheldon · 10/06/2019 18:31

I only pay it because the law forces me to biased overpaid sexist loads of twats

wherehavealltheflowersgone · 10/06/2019 18:31

No, everyone I know over 75 has a
much higher disposable income than me, plus loads of capital in big mortgage free houses that now sell for £800K++

They would also agree that it's farcical and would prefer we that money invest in children's services and closing the poverty gap.

Victormeldrew1 · 10/06/2019 18:32

No I would definitely not pay more no

rideawhiteswan · 10/06/2019 18:32

I am not willing to pay towards oap's TV licence, I think this it's a good ring that only pensioners on pension credit get free TV licences.
As another poster said I'd be happy to pay higher taxes to ensure old people get higher quality care.

BackforGood · 10/06/2019 18:33

No.
As many have already said, there are many over 75s who are considerably wealthier than those with young families. Not sure it is something they need for free.
If you do "rely on it" and rarely go out, etc etc, then actually less than 40p a day is extraordinarily good value for that kind of 'lifeline'.

SpangledBoots · 10/06/2019 18:33

Nope.

I'd prefer if the BBC could be more self sufficient with sponsored online and international offerings.

NoonAim · 10/06/2019 18:34

Speak for yourself Babdoc. You are obviously from a wealthier family than I am! Not everyone of my generation (I was born in the 50s) benefitted from student grants, my parents couldn't afford to send me to university - only the elite of my generation could attend.
It was nice for you that you could 'invest' - we struggled to keep our heads above water all our lives!
And cheap mortgages? Not in the 80s!

It's a kind thought Trinity (nice to 'see' you btw) but I wouldn't expect others to subsidise my tv licence.

Stunn · 10/06/2019 18:34

Nope.

The pensioners I know are loaded. Lots of disposable income, mortgages paid off, money in the bank.

Eminybob · 10/06/2019 18:35

Most over 75’s I know have a lot more money than I do, and half the outgoings.

I agree that it should be free to those on pension credits though.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 10/06/2019 18:37

No. My in laws pensions are higher than our take home pay.

The rhetoric that every single pensioner is living off tuppence And choosing heating or food is quite frankly insulting to all the people (including a significant number of pensioners) out there who truly are living on the breadline. Make it means tested along with bus passes and free prescriptions.
