What does your job make you notice?

I work in advertising so I always notice bad fonts, dodgy claims, poor punctuation, use of stock photos and all sorts of things that leave me steaming with annoyance while normal people all around seem to be able to walk past a crap sign without wincing.

Does your job make you notice things the normals don't see?

I can cut through Parliamentary spin and spot when Ministers go off message. I feel sorry for the briefing team who will have to sort out the mess. If Boris is the new PM he will need a full time clean up team!

I can spot when news items/ parliamentary questions etc are being "fudged" - quite often percentages will be used when the actual numbers are low and they will swap between using percentages, percentage points or actuals depending on what sounds most impressive.

I hate ambiguity in legislation - it needs to be precise. So like other posters, I tend to spot errors and typos. (To be fair, I've made a few gaffes of my own, so try not to be too pedantic)! P

This is an awesome thread!

OverseasWorker · 10/06/2019 17:29

British Embassy overseas:
People with no travel insurance
People with no EHIC card
A lot of death, you'd be surprised just how many residents and tourists die overseas every day
A huge expectation and misconception that the UK govt can help financially, it can't.
A lot of spoon feeding and arse wiping

Some people should not be allowed to travel......

alligatorsmile · 10/06/2019 17:32

What do healthy sheep and ill sheep do differently? Curious minds want to know!

People's veins - I was a chemo nurse and would have loved some big juicy veins to cannulate instead of poor chemical ravaged ones. Also, people with hair loss/wigs etc going about their daily business - made me think about how much cancer treatment impacts every day life.

FrenchyQ · 10/06/2019 17:39

I notice that people can be really quite neurotic about bacteria and think it is all bad and going to kill you

SeaViewBliss · 10/06/2019 17:45

I work in the NHS so I am always super nice to NHS staff. But I do also notice when someone is being crap and it’s usually down to poor communication.

pastaparadise · 10/06/2019 17:46

Like others have said, poor parenting - e.g. shouting and swearing at kids for things that they can't help like falling over. Lack of empathy to children just makes me sad. Now i have dc of my own i have a lot more understanding how hard it can be, but some parents do so much damage.

Also how stats are spun to tell whatever message you want - lies, damned lies and statistics

Peachsummer · 10/06/2019 17:47

I used to teach. I can read a list of names and pick out the ones most likely to be badly behaved (certain types of parents pick certain names). I can bullshit like it’s an Olympic sport (we’re doing it this way because it’s a better pedagogical approach, absolutely not because we can’t afford the resources to do it the correct way). And I’m amazingly diplomatic (you’re not allowed to tell parents the truth about their kids).

ErrolTheDragon · 10/06/2019 17:48

I notice bad science in films etc, supposed scientists saying things they just wouldn't, that kind of thing. Occasionally notice science done realistically in dramas, it's the exception rather than the rule hence noticeable.

LemonRedwood · 10/06/2019 17:49

I notice how the kind and considerate children always have the kind and considerate parents and how the rude and nasty children have the rude and nasty parents
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree

I can't remember who said it but:
Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they never fail to imitate them

I think it's so important that those who have a chance to influence those unlucky children who don't have good role models at home do so, by modelling what it should look like.

I've noticed that there are no good or bad children, just lucky and unlucky ones.

Peachsummer · 10/06/2019 17:49

I also notice bad science in films, just because I’m a nerd not because it’s my job Grin

Many years ago I was a silver service waitress. I see all the time how people in the hospitality industry make life incredibly difficult for themselves, and itch to sort it out. Later, I was a civil servant, and I am aware when ministers are going off brief, and imagine the officials beating their heads against the wall.

derxa · 10/06/2019 17:52

Ill sheep isolate themselves. Their heads/ears might be down. They've got shitty bottoms in some cases. They could be very skinny.
There's 1000 ways a sheep can die.
A healthy sheep sometimes looks as if it is dead but it can be lying down having a good sleep.

BumbleBeeWineGlass · 10/06/2019 17:54

I work in care (specifically dementia) I notice how awful people can be to their ageing family members and the people that care for them. Not all but a lot of people treat us like servants and speak to us like dirt.

BertrandRussell · 10/06/2019 17:59

Derxa-I was told that frequently the first symptom of ill health in a sheep is death......

mizu · 10/06/2019 18:00

Bertie me too! Been teaching EFL + ESOL for nearly 25 years and can usually tell where someone is from/what nationality they are by the errors they make in their writing.

I also see how incredibly strong people are when faced with having to start their lives again in a new country.

lotusbell · 10/06/2019 18:05

How many people sign up for things without reading the details...

gingajewel · 10/06/2019 18:07

I work in hr, I can spot when someone is lying and making things up a mile off!
I can also spot the people at work that if we want to get something out we can tell them and within ten minutes the whole workplace will no!
Lastly when I’m interviewing 99% of the time I don’t register how the person looks or what is on their cv bit how they come across and if they would be easy to work with! You can come to an interview in a T-shirt and jeans or a smart power suit and I wouldn’t bat an eyelid as long as I think you will be good at the job and a good fit in the business!

derxa · 10/06/2019 18:07

Derxa-I was told that frequently the first symptom of ill health in a sheep is death..... Very true Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 10/06/2019 18:08

The only thing I know about sheep conformation is that an inverted sheep may be healthy but is likely to die if not helped to turn rightside up. That's from listening to The Archers though. (I've never known how the heck they get stuck on their backs in the first place but that's probably a topic for another thread.Grin)

EastMidsGPs · 10/06/2019 18:10

Previously HCP - How often people attending for routine appointments wear grubby underwear, often when immaculately dressed in the outside.
The size and shape of earlobes and their potential for giving up blood easily. Used to take a specific blood test that involved earlobe blood. The fatter the earlobe the better!
Also from this, how many people never take their earrings out to clean them yuk
Education - how schools, doctors' surgeries, government offices, anywhere really LOVE signs and notices. Usually in a variety of fonts, sometimes in capital letters, often dog earred, usually issuing instructions or warnings .... Look around, they're every blooming where and cast not a thought to those who struggle to read. Hospital departments are the worst.

SaveFerris1 · 10/06/2019 18:11

Veins. And how easy or not I could get an IV line in 😂

Hefzi · 10/06/2019 18:11

How there is surprisingly little correlation there is between intellectual capacity and a doctoral degree...

Sheep are bastards for dying: any excuse, no notice - and they're especially prone to it the night after you've congratulated them for getting better Angry

derxa · 10/06/2019 18:16

We're training our show sheep at the moment. They have to stand with a leg at each corner Grin No doubt one will leap over 2 pens like last year. One of best ones is Irish but he's lost his identity tags I'm not allowed to order new ones so I have to get the previous owner to order and post me them. It's worse than security at MI5.
