Is it ludicrous to want a pet monkey?

Hi all,
I have watched the video of the monkey being reunited with the individuals who saved it, and it was so cute, and now I love monkeys and want one. Am I being absurd? The sensible part of my brain would never get one, but the (bigger) reckless part of my brain would. I know it's not feasible, but my heart has been stolen by monkeys. What do I do?

a monkey as a pet in dreamland would be ace.
A monkey as a pet in real life would not be ace.

You cannot have a monkey. Monkeys are not pets. Thats like keeping a person as a pet to entertain you

buzzwizz619 · 10/06/2019 22:44

What do you do? You take a trip to monkey world in Dorset and spend the day looking at the consequences of the pet trade simples 🙂

Soola · 10/06/2019 22:46

@DasMumBoot
Thank you for that informative post. I think we will give a gorilla a miss.

There is a lovely Hyena at our local rescue centre that we might adopt instead. Fingers crossed it will get on ok with our vulture and armadillo.

MyNewBearTotoro · 10/06/2019 22:52

My local pet shop sells pet monkeys. I was shocked the first time I went in and saw them as I didn’t think they were legal in the UK but for some species you don’t even need a license. Honestly it breaks my heart to see them locked in a cage every time I go in. I don’t imagine a monkey can ever be properly cared for as a pet. I admit sometimes I’m tempted (although they’re £1000 each so nlt really an option!) mainly because I think if I adopted one it would be better than potentially being bought just as a novelty pet that wasn’t cared for, but I couldn’t really support that trade.

Soola · 10/06/2019 23:04

One of my favourite monkey videos

OhMsBeliever · 10/06/2019 23:08

I want a donkey. He could live in my back garden, it's medium sized, I'm sure he'd like it. There's no access apart from through the house though, so it would be quite fun to walk him out the front door. I could take him on the school run, there's a nice field on the way for him to play in.

I'm going to get a donkey. I sponsor one, I'm going to demand they send me the donkey. I pay for it, it's mine.

I don't want a monkey. I watched Friends.

Octopus37 · 10/06/2019 23:21

I can send my DH to live with you if you like. I call him an orangatan and am always trying to rehome him. You could borrow him to try it out. As for the poster who said having a child would be easier than having a monkey. I wouldn’t bank on it. In all seriousness get a dog

Coronapop · 10/06/2019 23:24

In a word 'Yes', it is ludicrous.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/06/2019 01:20

The humour on here is sadly lacking.
I could be wildly wrong but I think this was meant in a light hearted way. I don't think op is actually going to go and adopt the bloody monkey.
What's with the nastiness.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/06/2019 06:42

I’d like a Sloth. But of course I’d never be so ridiculously stupid or cruel to get one. I’ll stick to rescuing unwanted older cats with medical problems nobody else will choose.

dreaming174 · 11/06/2019 07:14

Haha, I know I'm being stupid, but I love animals.

You definitely don't love animals if you're considering a monkey as a pet, quite the opposite.

Branleuse · 11/06/2019 08:01

I feel I probably shouldnt admit here that I really want a capybara.

LimeKiwi · 11/06/2019 08:35

YABU.
It'll start off cute, then start slamming doors after playing The Lion Sleeps Tonight and start dry humping your leg and Curious George's as well.
Sorry, clearly been watching too much Friends Grin

Mrsjayy · 11/06/2019 08:38

Those individuals didn't save the poor chimp they paid to hug it that video and story is a hoax. What would you do with your chimp once it grew to the strength of 6 people?

I don't actually intend to get a monkey... was that not clear?

NooNooHead1981 · 11/06/2019 12:31

What happens when the pet chimp rips your face off...?

I know that monkeys probably aren’t as strong or vicious but they could inflict a hell of a bite and injuries.

Yes, grow up and stop being bloody ludicrous.😳🙄

ReginaGeorgeous · 11/06/2019 13:15

I want a goat. I don't particularly love animals, I just can't be fucked mowing the lawn.

IncognitaIgnorama · 11/06/2019 13:22

If you want something to nurture and take care of, how about a pot plant?

Mrsjayy · 11/06/2019 13:25

But you did find the video cute , my link doesn't work but the private facility that chimp is breeds takes babies from mothers handrears and takes money for hugs, it really isn't cute.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/06/2019 13:43

Yes, I think it was. Perhaps the lack of lightheartedness in many of the responses is because there actually are idiots who do have pet monkeys (and unscrupulous people who trade in them) which makes the whole subject unpleasant, not really a joking matter?

dontforgettheyellowbird · 11/06/2019 15:51

I hate to be pedantic, but Soola , Mike Nesmith is dead

Soola · 11/06/2019 17:04

Mike Nesbitt is alive according to wiki
