Is it ludicrous to want a pet monkey?

Hi all,
I have watched the video of the monkey being reunited with the individuals who saved it, and it was so cute, and now I love monkeys and want one. Am I being absurd? The sensible part of my brain would never get one, but the (bigger) reckless part of my brain would. I know it's not feasible, but my heart has been stolen by monkeys. What do I do?

Monkeys are my favourite animal.

However you should stick to watching MonkeyBoo on YouTube.

stucknoue · 10/06/2019 18:00

Yes, look on the monkeyworld website who are campaigning to stop allowing primates as pets. They rescue them all the time, adopt one in a zoo

BasiliskStare · 10/06/2019 18:12

I know this is two, but monkeys can assert themselves - capuchin monkeys OP - observe the handler & her dress

A monkey as a pet went out with the Georgians. Rubbish idea. Get a goldfish & don't forget to feed it. I think you need to think more carefully before getting a dog even.

Deadposhtory · 10/06/2019 18:13

Don't be so daft!

hairypaws · 10/06/2019 18:14

I always wanted a tiger 🤷‍♀️

BasiliskStare · 10/06/2019 18:18

Well I saw on an advertisement you could adopt a snow leopard. So cute and lovely snow leopard babies . Thank goodness I could not find a cat litter tray big enough Wink

Cherylshaw · 10/06/2019 18:26

My old boss was going to get one and it would have been part of my job to look after it! I already watched her 26 dogs and exotic bird. I was a bit like wtf then she changed her mind as it shits everywhere and she would have to put a nappy on it...
That was literally the only thing against getting it, she was well up for it

OldAndWornOut · 10/06/2019 18:30

You get pet monkeys because they are taken from their mothers, removed from their natural surroundings, and destined to spend their lives as prisoners, on leashes and wearing nappies.

Just vile.

SquirrelShit · 10/06/2019 18:33

I must be naive, because I assumed the OP was joking and that nobody actually keeps monkeys as pets. Shocked to read that they do.

A childhood friend of mine loved monkeys/apes/gorillas. So he spent years working in Africa, looking after young chimps (I THINK they were chimps) who had been orphaned, presumably because of poaching.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/06/2019 19:37

A monkey as a pet went out with the Georgians.

Roger in the Swallows and Amazon's books had a pet monkey. It was directly responsibly for sinking their ship, IIRC. Yet another reason (apart from the bleeding obvious) to avoid.

DS2 (22) wants a tiger. He plans to be very rich and have an island with a tiger on.
Hoping that 22 is months not years....ConfusedGrin

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/06/2019 19:42

Fine to fantasise about it, batshit crazy and irresponsible to even consider doing anything about it.

I wouldn't work at Monkey World as PP suggested - I've heard nothing but horror stories of what it's like to work there from former staff.

bebeboeuf · 10/06/2019 19:44

Didn’t read whole thread. Just saw title and came to say:

Yes

Cherrysoup · 10/06/2019 19:44

Sigh. Do try harder, OP. God, it’s not even half term.

JaneJeffer · 10/06/2019 19:51

iklboo · 10/06/2019 20:11

I want a bat sanctuary. I'd live in it (in a separate apartment with a 360° view not, like in the cave - apart from daily visits).

ilovepixie · 10/06/2019 20:16

I've always wanted a pet monkey and a parrot too! That's from reading too much Enid Blyton as a child lol.

Soola · 10/06/2019 20:30

Will you be treating your monkey like a child and sending him/her to dance classes?

Soola · 10/06/2019 20:36

You could date a guy who is a Gorillagram.

Serin · 10/06/2019 20:44

If you really love animals and nature why not join the RSPB and learn about all the wildlife all around you. Possibly consider learning about bees and maybe get a bee hotel?
I guess bees might lack the wow factor if you are using your pet to impress people but TBH if you tell most folk you have a monkey at home they will think you are a dick anyway.

midsomermurderess · 10/06/2019 20:51

Yes. Monkeys are not pets.

DasMumBoot · 10/06/2019 21:01

I’ve got a western silverback gorilla. Housetrained, very intelligent and apart from episodes of randomly ripping out the fitted wardrobes, smashing the windows with his fists if the postman doesn’t bring him bananas each morning and defending me by beating anyone who approaches into a pulp, he’s no trouble whatsoever. A monkey will be a piece of cake to live with. Pm me if you like.

Soola · 10/06/2019 21:26

@DasMumBoot

Does he moult a lot?

Beat his chest and bellow?

I wouldn’t want to be constantly hoovering and be worried he would make a lot of noise when I went out.

SilverySurfer · 10/06/2019 21:47

I don't believe 'I love animals' and 'I want a monkey for a pet' are compatible.

If you really loved animals you would know that primates are social animals who live in groups and with whom humans share quite a large percentage of DNA, 98% with chimps. Perhaps you would like to be removed from your habitat and be a monkey's pet? Hmm

DasMumBoot · 10/06/2019 21:51

Soola I can’t lie about the moulting. It can be a problem and I’ve got through 6 Dyson Animals (they do NOT handle ALL pet hair despite what it says in the ads) since I got him.

I’ve done a lot of relaxation with him (youtube has been a godsend) so the chest beating/bellowing has calmed down plus he’s mellowed with age a bit. The visits by the police and environmental health are down to about 1 a month now which is a big improvement.

Neighbours - not an issue. It’s weird but the semi next door has been empty for about 5 years now. Not sure why because it’s a really nice house and we’re in the catchment area of 2 schools with outstanding OFSTEDS 🤷🏽‍♀️.

XXcstatic · 10/06/2019 22:11
video? That's an ape, not a monkey. Jesus.

I don't think you're ready to own a chimp, OP, though adding one to your household would raise the average IQ.
