What percentage of your salary is your mortgage and how old are you?

We’re mortgage free at 50 and looking at getting a mortgage that would take ten years to pay off at 30% of our take home pay. No other debts though and minimal other outgoings.

  1. 500 pounds on a joint monthly salary of 4k so 12.5%?
Magmatic80 · 09/06/2019 08:07

Ours is 23% of our joint salary after tax, but we overpay to 30%

ChangingStates · 09/06/2019 08:09

On my own, with 2 kids, many many years of paying left, about 29% of monthly take home.

Oh god nearly 40%. This will be the peak though I hope.

Youngandfree · 09/06/2019 08:10

34 and 0% as mortgage free.

chocolatebuttonsandcheese · 09/06/2019 08:10

66%, 26

stillworkingitout · 09/06/2019 08:10

30% is ok for us (and we still have a childcare bill). If you can get a longer term I’d consider that and make overpayment as you’ll probably pay it down quicker (the overpayment is all capital repayment). But it depends a little on the amount of the mortgage and the rate as to how much you’d save. Some companies are allowing mortgages up to 70(!) at the moment. I’d only consider it a good option though if you’re dedicated enough to pay it as though it were a shorter loan

Ellabella989 · 09/06/2019 08:12

Ours is 12.5% of our joint salaries and we are 30 and 35

VashtaNerada · 09/06/2019 08:13

50% of my salary but husband works too, so probably more like 25% of our joint earnings. I’m 39.

Myotherusernameisshy · 09/06/2019 08:13

37, 18% of joint take home pay.

Wheresmywandharry · 09/06/2019 08:13

Our joint income is £6500 per month and our mortgage is £1300

We are only in a flat though. It'll easily rise to £1900 or so a month when we move to a house.

Wheresmywandharry · 09/06/2019 08:14

Oh and we are 30 & 35

dudsville · 09/06/2019 08:14

I don't know, but all of my house hold expenditure, including mortgage, all bills, food, randoms and a float for things like when I need a new washing machine, is 45%. I'll be mortgage free in 6 yrs.

user1493413286 · 09/06/2019 08:15

25% and feels a lot

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 09/06/2019 08:16

23% of our income, which is a single income at the moment as we have two under 3 at home. We are 31 and 35.

If it was a joint income it'd be about 12%

flumpybear · 09/06/2019 08:16

We're just having a massive extension done to our home, it's an investment as the house / area is expensive so I'm seeing this as investing our money ... we're in our mid 40's and it'll be about 25% if our income, albeit my husband is training so his salary should increase somewhat over the next few years and I'm at the top of my scale looking to move up so this % should shift hopefully!

WheelyCote · 09/06/2019 08:16

17% and aged 41. A number of years to pay off yet

Sleepyquest · 09/06/2019 08:18

Joint income 19% but that'll go up once HTB is incorporated! I'm 28. I think 30% would push us a bit hard at the moment, but only you know your finances!

puppymouse · 09/06/2019 08:18

1k a month. It's about 18%. 39/42 both work, me part time.

Scion123 · 09/06/2019 08:18

20% of joint income and we’ve 38 and 40 with 6 years left.

RiddleyW · 09/06/2019 08:18

When I first rented in London in the early 00’s my rent accounted for about 80% of my salary I think. That makes me feel better about the mortgage amount.

Newmumma83 · 09/06/2019 08:19

35 years mortgage would be 65% of my income but it’s a joint mortgage so about 25%
Will be mortgage free when 70years old.

Only way to afford it, have a baby and extra care costs that will take 60% of my income based on parents taking baby 2 days a week .. hoping to try and over pay at a later time ... other options is to keep in good nick and downsize later on.

Just didn’t want to keep paying someone else’s mortgage.

AnduinsGirl · 09/06/2019 08:22

15% of my salary and I'm 34

PlumpAndPlain · 09/06/2019 08:32

10% of joint income. We are 35 and 39. We overpay to 15% at the minute

Blankiefan · 09/06/2019 08:44

Ours is 12% but we're overpaying so pay 26%. Should be mortgage free in 5 years.

We're 43 and 50.
