Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Mancala -we have about 5 different sets -but you don't see them in shops anymore. My parents had them and I'm now a bit sad and collect them when I see them in charity shops etc

dreygrey · 09/06/2019 09:57

fish and chips wrapped in newspapers
children outside pubs with some crisps and lemonade
cats - hardly any around here, are more cats being kept indoors

wheresmymojo · 09/06/2019 09:58

Net curtains

wheresmymojo · 09/06/2019 09:58

Butterflies - used to see a lot as a child in the 80s but I hardly ever see them now Sad

jennymanara · 09/06/2019 09:59

I know younger people with landlines, but that is because they live in rural areas with terrible mobile phone reception.

Those crocheted doilies that would be under fruit bowls etc

SkydivingKittyCat · 09/06/2019 09:59

Broken biscuits.

Why did they always taste better than unbroken ones?

x2boys · 09/06/2019 10:00

wheresmymojo · 09/06/2019 10:00

Dandelion & burdock fizzy drink

user1469830006 · 09/06/2019 10:00

Free gifts from the petrol station. I think my mum once won a cola drinking glass

Groovee · 09/06/2019 10:01

@wowfudge I eat ringos all the time. Aldi often have them and Sainsbury's and Tesco and Asda tend to have them.

nakedscientist · 09/06/2019 10:01

Hovercraft

Celticdawn5 · 09/06/2019 10:05

My husband bought a rain bonnet not so long ago to cover his hat whilst yomping the Pennine way.He thought it was brilliant.
I have vertical blinds. Dust does not lodge on them.Got them when I thought we would not be having any more cats.Cats and vertical blinds do not mix well, at least not with our two cats.
Loose tea dispensers on the wall in the kitchen? Don’t see them about now.
So many of the pp’s bring back memories

maddiemookins16mum · 09/06/2019 10:05

I haven’t seen my cheekbones or chin for several decades.

x2boys · 09/06/2019 10:06

You can buy a 500ml bottle of Dandelion and Burdock for 31pence at Home bargains,@wheresmymojo, and I have net curtains in the kitchen.

Celticdawn5 · 09/06/2019 10:06

Brown and orange Formica kitchens

HalfBloodPrincess · 09/06/2019 10:06

Me and my friends all had bedrooms decorated with this sad looking clown (early/mid 80s) - want to say Periot or Peridot but the name escapes me. Younger sibling had snatch the dog.

Talcum powder in a little tub with a powder puff.

Fabric shops. My mum made all of our clothes and I used to love choosing the material (and the wool in winter)

AltogetherAndrews · 09/06/2019 10:09

Scotland, when I was little, children used to gather outside the church when there was a wedding on for the scramble, the groom or father of the bride chucked lots of change into the street and then you fought to get your hands on it.

Possibly not considered a good idea to have small children fighting in the road for money nowadays.

x2boys · 09/06/2019 10:11

Yes I remember the clown ,I think it was pierrot?@HalfBloodPrincess,fancy rubbers you put on top.of pencills, troll,s (not the kind you see on here!)them doll things with crazy hair .

dreygrey · 09/06/2019 10:14

If you don't have vertical blinds then what do you have instead?

wheresmymojo · 09/06/2019 10:19

Here (South East) vertical blinds have totally fallen out of favour.

You sometimes see curtains but mainly Roman blinds or internal wooden plantation shutters.

mooncuplanding · 09/06/2019 10:20

There are 2 things I should make a comeback:

Kitchen hatches
Those beady door curtains

jennymanara · 09/06/2019 10:20

We have curtains as do most people round here.

Are people mistaking vertical blinds for roller blinds or are there really streets of the UK liked with these? They remind me of offices in the 80s!

@maddiemookins16mum Grin

Eye level grills. Best thing ever. Bring them back along with serving hatches.
