Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Had to skip rtft as it was moving faster than me but to the poster who mentioned Aqua Manda scent, there was also a lovely gritty soap which worked better on teen blackheads than anything else. It was a very seventies product.

cms1972 · 11/06/2019 10:08

Clayplease, they really should bring back those Fry's chocolate cream bars... it was like all your favourite soft centres in one place!

dollydee · 11/06/2019 10:14

Fireplace Companion Sets.
Long toasting forks - my grandma made the best toast ever over a real fire when we called in before school.
Selection boxes at Christmas that had all the chocolate bars hidden in straw. Oh the joy of routing through it to see which bars were in the box and then finding one that had remained hidden in the straw.

Benjaysmum · 11/06/2019 10:15

Those card figures and card clothes you cut out , the clothes had wee tabs at the side to fold onto the figure 🤣 Old round dial telephones ☎️ I doubt my kids would know how to work them 😜 Just realised my youth has disappeared without me noticing too 😳

Wormentrude · 11/06/2019 10:16

To the PP who mentioned the single shoe on top of the bus shelter: come to Cheltenham. There's a single wedge shoe on top of the 94 shelter on the prom. It's been there for at least four years and has turned from black to green, either with age or just... slime.

Sweetpeanutsandcolacubes · 11/06/2019 10:16

Whatsnewpussyhat. My mum also was a littlewoods pools lady lol. We also helped mum fill in the greenfield stamp books and the co-op ones. She would save them up for Christmas.

Our local papers Newsshopper, Mercury and Greenwich times. All available online of course but nothing like proper paper versions.

Proper wagon wheels..have you seen them now??
Buying sweets by the ounce or quarter from corner shop, everything from bon bons ( flavours, toffee, strawberry and lemon). Tom thumb pips. Barley sugar when did that disappear? Cough candy. Ruffle bars. Olde Jamaican chocolate bar (my mum's favorite).
I could go on all day about the sweets, I've got a mouthful of fillings as proof haha.
Peg bags that hung on the washing line.
My daughters beautiful long hair till she had it all cut. (I got hairdresser to give me the ponytail, still got it in a box along with her baby teeth).
I too thought white poodles did white poo haha...so gullible as kids!!
Nodding dogs in back or cars, them fancy tissue boxes also in backs of cars.
TBH we all miss certain things from way back when and having MN stops us all from 'forgetting them completely. So thank you OK for giving us a chance to reflect on pass times 😁

Sweetpeanutsandcolacubes · 11/06/2019 10:18

Sorry Thank you OP for thread 😆

MarleyBarley18 · 11/06/2019 10:23

Does my waistline count? Lol

BillGiggeloe · 11/06/2019 10:47

White dog poo is still a thing just not on the streets.

If we don't clear the poos in our garden for a couple of days in the summer, they go white!

ralfeesmum · 11/06/2019 11:06

Those very sturdy and square woven wicker shopping baskets that could be seen all over the place at one time.

Mind you, they could only accommodate maybe a cabbage and two jars of jam and a purse.

But they looked quaint!

cms1972 · 11/06/2019 11:24

Ooh my mum had one of those chunky wicker shopping baskets !! Hugely impractical really; not only because (you are right) they didn't hold much, but a purse sitting Right There in full view in the middle of it would be an open invitation to thieves. Not to mention getting trapped in revolving doors and knocking small children out as you heaved it around.
Something I DO remember fondly is - we did a weekly shop in Sainsburys, and to the right of the tills there was always a vast pile of beaten up old cardboard boxes heaped against the wall.
These were thoughtfully provided by Sainsburys & we would pick the sturdiest one to pack our shopping in. I also remember very clearly the thick brown paper Sainsburys carrier bags with the thick brown paper handles. It would seem like a good idea today to bring those cardboard boxes back! But I suppose it would be a trip risk and a fire risk.... much better to annihilate the environment & surrounding wildlife with plastic.

thenightsky · 11/06/2019 11:30

Our local Morrisons still piles up boxes near the tills for everyone to use!

I live somewhere where new pubs are opening. All the old traditional working class mens pubs are closing down. But real ale pubs catering to the middle aged and middle class are opening up. They all have beer mats too.

I had one of those baskets for my school cookery lesson in the early 70s

BumbleBeeWineGlass · 11/06/2019 12:41

Tutti Fruitti ice cream - I haven't seen anyone offer it in years and it's soooo good!

BumbleBeeWineGlass · 11/06/2019 12:43

I'd love to know when you live @DustyOwl (in a non creepy way!) I'd love a place with a butcher/bakery/greengrocer

jennymanara · 11/06/2019 12:44

There is a butcher, bakery and greengrocer where I live. We lost our ironmongers though.

Surprised to read that vertical blinds are an 'old' thing. We replaced our curtains with blinds in the last 10 years, although have both in some rooms as sun shows through. I have always thought of 'nets' as being of older generation and I am 50!! I've never had nets in any home I've lived since leaving my parents' home when I was about 20.

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 11/06/2019 13:01

@Soola people round here still do the Windolene windows thing when moving or redecorating.

I would love a good housecoat for doing my cleaning. And an apron for cooking. No one really wears them much these days.

I do have vertical blinds though. I didn't know they were outdated? It's either them or the dreaded net curtains ShockConfused

applesarerroundandshiny · 11/06/2019 13:02

Jenny we have a lot of mini pubs opening up with normal shop fronts rather than traditional pub buildings.

MachineBee · 11/06/2019 13:19

Crispy pancakes with curried chicken filling.

My Grandad eating pomegranate seeds with a pin.

Beef and tomato sausages.

Beef olives - bit of a Scottish thing I think. Thinly sliced lean beef wrapped around sausage stuffing. Cooked on sliced onions and covered with gravy - delicious.

My DMum had a Flatley Drier. Basically a tall metal box with a heating element at the bottom, protected by a metal mesh with wooden dowels at the top to hand off wet (not dripping) laundry. Very effective. We kept our in the lean to at the side of the house where my DDad kept his tomato plants.

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 11/06/2019 13:27

Cheap Constance Carroll make up sold in the corner shop. I have never found a mascara to beat theirs, have very pale lashes and they did like a caramel brown one that made your lashes huge!!

MissLadyM · 11/06/2019 13:30

Silkience conditioner was fantastic! It was so rich and the smell was glorious

thecatsthecats · 11/06/2019 13:54

Two women at work were insistent about finding the catalogue to buy a lamp... The rest of us sitting there in front of a dozen computer screens wondering if google was down or something!
