Any jewellers on here? Need advice please

My great-grandmother's ring.
It was given to me last year and I had it checked and valued. It was tested as 18ct white gold. It looked like white gold.

A stone came out so I put it away for a while, but recently wanted to wear it again to took it to a local independent jeweller asking for stone to be replaced and all the claws checked.
On collection this morning; the stone has been reset and all the claws checked and repaired where necessary, but they informed me that at some point in the past it had been plated with yellow gold, so they had redone it.
They have plated my Great-Grandmother's white gold ring with 9ct yellow gold. It looks awful. My other rings are 18ct Yellow gold so it's a completely different colour and because it's a cluster ring there is a lot of visible yellow on the top. It's very gaudy, where before it was such a beautiful wearable ring.
On googling I can find information on how to remove plate from silver or base metal but nothing for gold on gold. Can anyone advise if this is possible? I'm gutted...and they charged me for the privilege!

Why can't you complain to the jeweller for doing something you didn't ask for and get them to rectify it? And why did you pay them?

The repairer wasn't there today, only the lady in front of the shop. I have to call back on Monday. I was just wondering if removal is even possible.....

I’m not a jeweller, but isn’t white gold rhodium plating?

Hi notatwork. As CurcubitaPepo said you can get the ring rhodium plated to white gold. I have had it done before and it cost me £50 and looked fantastic. Good luck on Monday and stand your ground. The jewellers are 100% in the wrong for altering the ring without your say so.

I don't understand why jewellers take it upon themselves to do things like that.

I had a ring ruined by a jeweller who "corrected" the setting when he was just supposed to replace a loose stone. The third stone of the trio was offset yes. It was meant to be.

Plating can come off as easy as it goes on. Drop it back into them to reverse.

Sometimes when white gold rings come in and they've not been looked after for a long time they can look pretty yellow and the jeweller can wrongly assume that its the desired look for the ring.

Its fairly straightforward to do though- can be done in an afternoon. Usually white gold is rhodium plated to look more white- I'd recommend this is done instead.

Hi, ive worked in the jewellery trade for 14yrs so i can tell you that this can be rectified. There is no such thing as white gold. White gold is yellow gold mixed with other metals ie: silver and platinum and then its given a rhodium plating to give it the white appearance. Over time this will eventually fade so you will notice a yellowing to the shank of the ring, to bring the ring back to life it simply needs another rhodium plating. I do not understand however, why this particular jeweller would take it upon themselves to plate your ring in yellow gold, especially if you stated that it was white gold and they should of checked this by the hallmark. Take it back and ask them to rectify there mistake, the plating should come off and then they should be able to re rhodium plate over the top. Speaking from experience ive had customers come in wanting there yellow gold rings making white gold, which is possible its just the rhodium plating might not last long before the yellow starts to show through.
Hope any of my waffle helps 😊

I'm slightly confused why you left the shop with the ring? Did you pay?
