Job 1 - nice hours, easy commute, able to take x2 children to school (oh does the pick ups), small team of close knit people, understanding manager if ever need time off at short notice etc

Job 2 - 10k a year more than job 1 plus bonuses. Children would need to go to breakfast club 3x per week, a large team of 50+, unsure of manager would be understanding if kids sick etc, lengthy commute (1 hr one way), longer hours, more holiday entitlement

Which would you pick? Sorry to be vague - job is in the advertising sector.

Job 1 at first glance

How much would the £10k extra for job 2 would you actually get in your pocket once you deduct tax, NI, travel, breakfast club and anything else you’ll end up paying out on if you have less time at home (eg more convenience food)?

It would be job 1 for me. I've had a well paid job with a horrible boss, who was not understanding of childcare emergencies/sickness. It was so stressful and a long commute. I'm looking for something less paid and more flexible to fit around the children.

Depends on salary a bit -

Difference between 20k and 30k is a lot, 60k to 70k not so much (and a higher tax rate).

But generally, is the extra 10k a year after tax worth the extra commute and time away from your children? I’d be leaning towards no unless it would substantially change your standard of living.

I'd go for job 1 now and aim for something like job 2 when the kids are older.

£10K minus kids' club minus travel and including 10 hours of travel time makes it just not worth it.
