What do you do for a living?

What do you do?
Do you have a car?

Feeling very curious as someone on the absolute bottom with years of hard work to get out of poverty. Wondering what it’s like on the other side

Call centre chicken
Yes car

MaraScottie · 06/06/2019 23:55

Technical analyst for a digital publishing company.

Yes we've a family car. Thankfully we can get away with just one as my husband cycles to work.

CakeNinja · 06/06/2019 23:59

Support staff in a school.
Yes I have a car.
Are you saying that with years of hard with you will get out of debt? Or that after years of hard work you are now out of it?

EyeDrops · 07/06/2019 00:01

Boarding Houseparent. Yep, have a car.

Mummoomoocow · 07/06/2019 00:03

@cakeninja noticed how unclear I’ve been writing lately; that we won’t be out of poverty unless through some very hard work over a number of years. More than debt. MH, physically returning to work 40+ hours, procuring childcare, working upwards through training/ladders

Self employed beauty therapist but I also buy and sell clothes. I buy a bag for £10 and sell the items individually at boot sales and eBay. I also do clearance of houses. I have a niche business in the winter selling dog accessories for 12 weeks that us very lucrative.
I do have a car.
The side clothes hussle is a great way to get cash quickly and some great clothes !

MaraScottie · 07/06/2019 00:07

I also do matched betting on the side. Have made more than 2k since January. Worth thinking about if you're any good with numbers :)

bert3400 · 07/06/2019 00:07

Me & DH own our own business - I do all the admin. Love the freedom but it can be very stressful when relying on clients to pay, so I can pay our staff - we are always the last on the list to be paid - this week has been the worst, paying Corporation tax and Vat tax in the same week = very very stressed

CakeNinja · 07/06/2019 00:08

Just trying to work out where you’re coming from.
Hard not to compare yourselves to others but it’s not always helpful.

Keep chipping away at the debt however you can and look after yourselves as best as you can, specifically mentally.
Try not to think about the long game too often, it’s too daunting sometimes. Flowers
Have you got a job at the moment?

Mummoomoocow · 07/06/2019 00:17

@bert3400 yikes that sounds like a fun time 😬

@cakeninja thank you for your words honestly, it’s difficult not to compare definitely, but I’m filled with what I can only describe as confused wonder. I’ve come from a very poor background and I’ve never been in conversations with people who live a grander lifestyle. For example my SiL has a car but only through her grandparents who fund running it. I just can’t imagine how people pay the costs.

Journalist. Nope, no car. I can’t drive, failed my test several times. On top of all my outgoings I don’t think I could afford to run one anyway

wlv12 · 07/06/2019 00:52

Community midwife

Yes to the car - it’s a must for my job.

glsgow107 · 07/06/2019 01:03

I look after very rich people. No car.

Grumpymug · 07/06/2019 01:18

Duty/night manager in a hotel which translates to everyone else's bitch Grin
Just over min wage. No car, thousands of pounds and 4 failed tests later I can't afford to try again yet.

Bollockwort · 07/06/2019 01:32

Data analyst.

Yes I have a car - its third hand! Couldn't work without it due to deficiencies in public transport and I have to meet with multiple clients most days.

canihaveacoffeeplease · 07/06/2019 01:32

I'm a chocolatier and we have a chocolate/sweet shop.

Yes, have a car, and a work vehicle for deliveries.

speedbird55 · 07/06/2019 01:35

@Parsley1234 I would love to do that , where do you buy your bags of clothes from ?

Decormad38 · 07/06/2019 01:44

Uni lecturer
Yes to the car - need it to travel to work.

Expressedways · 07/06/2019 01:57

Executive assistant.
DH and I share a car as we live in the city and have good public transport so it really is a luxury rather than a necessity.

Madein1995 · 07/06/2019 01:59

I'm a programmes facilitator (very new), I've actually just come back after being on a training course. When offenders are on licence in the community, they have to complete group programme sessions. I'm part of a team delivering those.

I work from a probation office managed by a private company. Out of the 12 people in my course this week only 3 of us work in the community, and 1 of those working for NPS. The rest work in custody

Rickandportly · 07/06/2019 06:22

Night care worker but actually a glorified cleaner, min wage. Yes car, wouldn’t be able to get to work without it. I’m at the very bottom too.

happypotamus · 07/06/2019 07:01

I'm a nurse.
I can't drive but DH does so we have a car. Does that count?

Parsley1234 · 07/06/2019 10:34

@speedbird it’s a really easy business model but you need a car or access to one
I advertise on Facebook for bags of clothes I pay £10 per bag I then take it to the carboot sale wed sat/sun and sell them. Two years ago I was making between £300/£500 per week this year it’s been slower I deal in women’s mainly men’s are hard going and kids FORGET iT !!! 😂
Another business model is to go to the carboot buy and sell on eBay BUT it’s a tougher market and eBay always come down on the buyers side if you have a problem. My friend deals like that he always says to me I’m doing it wrong 😂as he makes about £1000. /£2000 per month via eBay.
I’ve been in shitters ditch a lot in my life and I know that fealing sometimes it’s hard to put one foot in front of the other.
Can you sell ? What are your strengths ? What can you do ? I also am a beauty therapist that has given me a great living for years but it’s a bit over saturated now ?
