If you were fluent in another language, what would it be?

I was born in Germany (my parents lived in Darmstadt for 8 years, and had my brother and sister there too) but we came back to the UK when I was just 5 weeks old. I WISH they'd brought us up as bilingual. They still talk German to each other on occasion and watch German films/read German books. I officially learnt at school but the teacher was crap and I have no brain for languages so I've forgotten all but the most simple words. It would really have opened doors for me if I'd been brought up understanding it. If I had a magic wand and could pick just one other language to be fluent in, it'd be German.

What about you? How many languages do you speak already and which new one would you choose? Why?

My French was OK but is a bit rusty now. Currently working on getting that back up to scratch. German is so rusty it’s almost non-existant.

Would like to learn Turkish as have family there and want to be able to manage a bit more than a few basic greetings and the odd word when I visit.

Welsh. I regret not sending the kids to a Welsh speaking school too but DH who is Welsh wasn't supportive.

I'd really love to learn Arabic or Russian. I have Sicilian Italian and French but it's the symbols, lines and dots that fascinate me!

English is my second language.
Portuguese first.
I'd love to be fluent in Spanish; I can understand most of it spoken and read practically fluent, but I can't communicate properly. This is just because it's so so so close to my mother language, but I'd love to be able to speak it fluently. I love Shakira songs so most of my spoken Spanish comes from her lyrics Grin
Also would love to learn Italian and French Smile

Speak a bit of French and read some koine (new testament) Greek.
Moved to Wales so now learning Welsh. Would love to get to at least a level standard.

I can speak fluent Irish (Gaelic) and enough French to get by when in France.

I can speak some Polish. Ireland has a big Polish population and I have a few Polish friends.
I'd love to be able to speak Russian.

I’m currently learning Spanish via Duolingo and a free course at our local community project.

I also want to learn German and Italian if I can, I really enjoy learning languages.

Finnish. It is a beautiful language.

I spent 6 months in Finland during my nurse training and I did pick up enough to get by at work but I was never fluent.

I speak German and Polish, and would love to learn Swedish or Hungarian. I also studied Russian but never got to a decent level due to crap teaching and lack of motivation/confidence (after I kept mixing it up with Polish) so if I had more free time I'd go back and start learning it again.

I personally most enjoyed learning languages through courses, meet-ups or language tandem because I find it motivating to be around other learners and native speakers, never managed to motivate myself to use DuoLingo...

I speak French and German as well as English, I did a degree in those languages. I’ve not spoken them for two years, but I don’t think I’m that rusty! Grin

It would be cool for me personally to speak fluent Bulgarian. My best friend from university is from Bulgaria so it’d be fun to speak with her in her native language. Her English is really really good, but it’d still be cool if I spoke Bulgarian.

@HelmutFrontbut I’m intrigued, as I’m obsessed with all things Greek. Do you mind saying where it is you live?
