You'd think Trump or someone would offer Melania a hand here...

That's a hell of a step down without a hand rail, in sky high heels onto uneven grass...

I'd have been scared my ankle would go over. Someone should have helped her.

Great to see wall to wall coverage this morning on all channels from Normandy. The logistics are fascinating even if nothing else moves you.

"Let’s hope we never have to do what those men and women did 75 years ago"

We still have to fight fascism.

Yes I think it's our chance to keep saying Thank You! to that generation. Mustn't forget what they had to go through for the good of future generations.

I think dino makes some good points .

Sentimentality and hypocrisy are not good memorials .

My mother ,when alive ,deplored sentimentalty about the war and grand ceremonies marking it .She said it glorified war and took the focus away from the polticians who lied and manipulated the public into sending their young to die .

She lost brothers and ,of course friends ,and saw others living with the long term effects of being involved .

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 06/06/2019 08:33

My grandfather threw his uniform into the Thames after the war. He still would have wanted to honour those who lost their lives.

They should be remembered with respect and understanding . People vary in what form they think this should take .

In my family one of the legacies of serving in WW1 and WW2 was a lack of trust directed at "those in charge" and a cynicism of public displays such as those seen in the last few days .

My mum would not have watched the recent coverage but she was happy to visit and talk about her experience in my son's primary school to support the teaching of the history surrounding the two last wars .

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 06/06/2019 08:52

My mum would have absolutely watched. She was a child during the war. It’s about the veterans not the politicians.

Sparklingfairylights · 06/06/2019 08:55

Anyone watching BBC coverage this morning, Naga with Harry just now Sad they're incredible these old boys.

peridito · 06/06/2019 09:03

It’s about the veterans not the politicians

I don't know if I can explain this very well but my mum's bugbear was that in making a big ceremony with emotional references to individual servicemen/women the part that politicians played in stirring up war and using ppl as cannonfoder was deliberately sidestepped .

She would have put it so much better !

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 06/06/2019 09:42

I think that’s for another day.

Sparklingfairylights · 06/06/2019 09:47

Me too.
