You'd think Trump or someone would offer Melania a hand here...

That's a hell of a step down without a hand rail, in sky high heels onto uneven grass...

I'd have been scared my ankle would go over. Someone should have helped her.

I am being unreasonable, but I do think they need to give it a rest. It’s been 75 years. Let it go. This sort of thing doesn’t help with the divisions in this country. Say “thanks guys” one last time and move on.

Don’t worry. You won’t have to put up with it for much longer. All those who risked their lives for your freedom will be dead soon. I can personally vouch for the fact that there’s at least one less WW2 veteran this year due to my 94 year old Dad dying. I’m sure his comrades will be following fairly soon.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 05/06/2019 14:44

Alexa so sorry to hear about your dad Flowers

dinosaurgrrrr · 05/06/2019 14:45

I agree notnow. There are people being blown up and starving right now across the world, why are we still devoting the entire lunchtime news to events that happened long before most of us were even born? I agree with honouring the veterans that are still alive with ceremonies but it doesn't need this amount of over the top coverage and certainly needs concluding in the next ten years or so. Sheridan Smith singing naff jolly songs won't bring back all those people who lost their lives needlessly due to selfish politicians and royals just like the ones stood there today, it's so hypocritical it's unbelievable.

MaddieElla · 05/06/2019 14:47

Yes, let's just forget about it now...

all those people who lost their lives needlessly

You think fighting against Hitler was needless?

TheWaiting · 05/06/2019 15:08

@dinosaurgrrrr, are you serious?

WWII, had nothing to do with selfish politicians. It was most of Europe and the US working alongside soldiers from a variety of other commonwealth countries to bring down one of the more brutal tyrannical regimes that history has ever seen. It’s the reason why despite what you might read, the majority of those 80yrs+ (Unlike those 50-80) voted to remain in the EU. Lest we forget indeed!

wowfudge · 05/06/2019 15:10

There's a breathtakingly ignorant lack of comprehension of the events being commemorated displayed by some posters on this thread. If you don't understand, do some research. There's a reason the term D-Day is still.in common use.

TheWaiting · 05/06/2019 15:13

^^ I agree

dinosaurgrrrr · 05/06/2019 15:16

We still have tyrannical regimes and concentration camps across the world today, but even though they are happening right now we all close our eyes to them. Instead we choose go on about something which is now a part of history and have warmongering twats like Trump standing there pretending to look humble. I think we need to start living in modern times and not keep living in the past.

wowfudge · 05/06/2019 15:17

I thought the ceremony today brought home how so many ordinary people took part in something extraordinary. And not just Brits and Americans either.

Sparklingfairylights · 05/06/2019 15:57

Dinosaur don't be so bloody disrespectful, honestly how dare you?!

AlexaAmbidextra · 05/06/2019 16:02

Alexa so sorry to hear about your dad

Thank you Books. I get so cross at people saying they’ve ‘had enough’ of us remembering. What a good thing all those young men who fought and and the many who died didn’t say they’d ‘had enough’. I’m sure my Dad would have liked to have forgotten what he saw when he helped to liberate Bergen-Belsen when he was only twenty- one.

endofthelinefinally · 05/06/2019 16:14

I used to do home visits to vulnerable elderly people.
In one home I noticed a SAS beret on a sideboard. I asked the gentleman if it was his.
I thanked him for everything he had done for us and his country. I sat and held his hand as the tears rolled down his cheeks.
A very humbling experience.
We should never forget.
Many veterans cannot talk about their experiences. So we should make the effort to remember and acknowledge them.

pusspuss9 · 05/06/2019 16:19

you could start by naming those responsible in the world for the tyrannical regimes and the concentration camps. Trump is not high on that list so why harp on about him? Obama was more of a war monger than he, as was Hilary Clinton .

dreichuplands · 05/06/2019 16:28

We should remember more history and not less.
No one side of the Brexit debate has more affinity with our past than the other.
I am very proud of the roles all my grandparents played during WW2 and am grateful for being bequeathed a country free of fascism.
It is my honor to remember them.

dinosaurgrrrr · 05/06/2019 16:29

How dare I what? Say what I think? Didn't realize we were all meant to have the same opinion 👍🏻 it's fine for it to be important to you, just don't expect everyone else to feel the same way.

Sparklingfairylights · 05/06/2019 16:43

I think if you read the thread you will find that only you and Timnus share the same completely disrespectful view Hmm

PickAChew · 05/06/2019 17:07

Hand on the back is an expression of dominance, not affection.

yomommasmomma · 05/06/2019 17:10

@NotNowMrTumnus you are an idiot.

dinosaurgrrrr · 05/06/2019 17:52

So what? I don't say what I think to win popularity contests.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/06/2019 18:07

Just as well.

I have just heard a piece on R4 - a letter written by a 16 year old french boy who was in the resistance - and about to be executed. My god. These letters they are reading out today.

My grandma had a letter that my grandfather wrote when he was in in Dunkirk and in hiding. I know the letters were being censored but still, the bravery.

SoupDragon · 05/06/2019 18:11

Some opinions are like buttocks - we all have them but they shouldn't be aired in public.

AlexaAmbidextra · 05/06/2019 18:13

How dare I what? Say what I think?

Dinosaur. Your ignorance is breathtaking. You wouldn’t have the privilege of saying what you think if these men hadn’t fought for your freedom.

Sparklingfairylights · 05/06/2019 18:22

Are you very young Dinosaur that might be the only excuse for your opinions. Have you watched any of the coverage today or too busy watching Love Island?

Horsemad · 05/06/2019 18:50

Disgraceful comments there from NotNowMrTumnus and dinosaurgrrrr. Utterly disgusting.

I've watched film of the troops who took part - young men, barely out of their teens. I look at my own sons who are a similar age and cannot imagine them being in the same situation.

I continually say a huge Thank You to the men who took part in life changing events like D Day. Thanks to them, we've never had to endure anything like that.
