Help me find a comfy chair!

Please recommend your comfy armchairs to me! We moved 18 months ago to a very small cramped rented house (no choice in the matter) and hence have very little space for furniture. We can fit one small 2 seater sofa and one armchair. The sofa is ok but sitting on it for any length of time gives me backache, not sure why.

When we first moved I bought a chair from a charity shop - it was ok to sit in but was a bit too big and had wooden bits on the arms that we constantly banged our knees on so it had to go. Then got another chair from Freecycle, an old style Ikea one that has turned out to have a completely knackered back cushion and is awful to sit in! I realise buying second hand is part of the problem, but we just can't afford new. I also have quite a bad back so that doesn't help either.

So we need a chair that is comfortable, with a fairly small footprint (most importantly not too wide), not leather or fake leather, padded arms, and not too low. Tell me about the chairs you love!

Have a look on your local Facebook marketplace as there are often chairs for sale.

The Strandmon from Ikea is incredible comfy and only £180

Hi Soola thanks for responding. I know - I look on there all the time but I was looking for specific recommendations so that I can then go in search of them, preferably in good used condition!

Thanks BBBear I'll check that one out Smile

IKEA classic. Very comfortable. Even more comfortable with the footstool.

@amicissimma oh the POÄNG! Ok, I see those come up a lot second hand but didn't give them much thought because they don't look like the sort of chair you can snuggle up and really relax in. Am I wrong?

I second the Ikea Strandmon. We've got 2 and the matching foot stools. I've got severe back and pelvic problems and it's the only chair that I've found comfortable. I sold my £1000 chair after I sat in one in Ikea.

I had a go on one of these yesterday and it was very comfy.

The wing chair from Ikea is comfortable. I’m looking for armchairs at the moment too. They are expensive compared to sofas on a per arse basis.

WRT to the height, we've put ours on chair risers because of my back problems so they're dead easy to get in and out of.

Thanks for the suggestions - these are really helpful. Chair risers are a great idea - i hadn't thought of that! The Dunelm chair looks fab but is way beyond my budget unfortunately. Basically it needs to be something I can find in good used condition on ebay, fb marketplace, even on freecycle or freegle. Ikea chairs are more likely to come up. I will certainly keep an eye out for a Strandmon after those recommendations, cheers all!
