Can I take passport photos with iPhone?

Just noticed DS child passport expired in March. He turns 16 in 4 weeks so I need to get his first adult passport.
The website says you can now upload a digital photo. Can I do this with my iPhone?
Also aside from his birth certificate do I need to send any other documentation?

We go to Italy on 19th July Confused

It's not a First adult passport though; that's for people that have never had a child passport before. It would have just been done as a renewal
