Anyone play chess in tournaments?

I want a little mini tournament/competition for my DS, 8. He’s a good player for his age so I don’t want it to be massively competitive but still nicely challenging because he’s better than me or DH so he gets very bored.

Where would I even find what’s local to me? A quick google brings up a huge amount of options and I want something credible/recommended iyswim.

Thanks!

I'm watching your thread as I'd like to find something local to us for my DS too. I've googled my local area but I can't find anything suitable. For example, the nearest club is on a school night and although it says children are welcome, it's from 8pm until 11. And there's barely anything else remotely suitable.

PM me and I can tell you what's reputable re tournaments

Hi, it depends on your location. Both my primary school kids play competition chess. PM me if you like.

DS plays in competitions organised by: www.englishchess.org.uk/Juniors/

Where do you live? I recently volunteered at a few local chess tournaments for kids. They are often very long, intense days and so many of the parents are horribly pushy with the kids. I’m not doing it again after one too many parents was unpleasant and aggressive with me.

I’m in Herts. Will PM and have a look on the link, thank you all!

reallyneedmoresleep that sounds horrid. Especially if you were volunteering, you’d think people would be less awful because you are doing it for the benefit of the kids! Confused

I know! Clearly I didn’t realise how very special and unique their children were (all of them!)
Does your son’s school do the Delaney Chess Challenge? Might be worth suggesting it for next year. Also, there’s a really great free app called “Play Magnus” where you can play against “Magnus Carlson” at different ages
