Baby drinking coke from a bottle

papergate · 01/06/2019 22:00

Saw this earlier and was horrified!

Baby maybe just over a year old crying in pushchair.

Mum gets bottle of full fat coke out from under the pram, fills up babies bottle and hands it to the baby.

I honestly cried when I saw the baby guzzling down the cola like it was milk.

How can anyone think this is acceptable?

BlackPrism No, I'm not saying anyone else says it to mean caffeinated or alcoholic. Just that that was our semi-logical extension of the joke that is "full-fat coke". I am saying most people who say "full-fat coke" don't actually think it's full fat.

A few other posters have said the same.

can’t we all start from the assumption that we are all trying to do the best for our kids in the context we find ourselves in.

Most people do, I think, because most people are. Very few parents set out to be neglectful or cruel. I've only met one in my career that I genuinely did not believe had their child's best interests at heart. Either you forcibly educate everyone who has a baby how to parent well, or you stop people having babies, which is a human rights violation. I was sent home from the hospital with a newborn having watched a video about not shaking babies and how to bath them but that was it. I'd paid for additional classes while pregnant but not everyone does this. It's not surprising that so many people get it wrong- if no one tells you, how do you know?

I've seen people go and buy a bottle specifically to put some coke into. I also looked after a 3 year old the other day, who had had 13 teeth out and two fillings!

It's a snapshot, I'd be more upset if she didn't care the child was thirsty.

@sinkgirl "And given how rarely properly managed diabetes should result in a hypo, I would be stunned if anyone with diabetes carries around a premixed dose of SOS every time they leave the house."

Actually that's not true. If someone has well managed type one diabetes, it's normal for them to have two or three hypos a week. My son and I both carry glucose in different forms all the time.

However, I did get him a coke yesterday as he had a sudden drop and we were in a cafe. He had treated with glucose tablets but they weren't working fast enough. Coke is really fast. We were both carrying glucojuice (premixed liquid glucose) but it is £1.50 per 15g glucose so coke is cheaper and probably more effective. 60p to treat a hypo rather than £3 as this was a particularly nasty one. It also meant we didn't need to go home immediately as we can't be anywhere without a very fast acting hypo treatment (we still had our stocks in our bags).

He's a preteen though so probably the judgement was less.

I'd have probably judged someone giving a toddler coke in a bottle in the past, but I now know lots of people for whom this is the hypo treatment of choice. If your child is at risk of having a seizure or becoming unconscious within a short space of time you get the glucose into them in the most effective was. For some little ones, that means coke in a bottle.

Lucozade used to be the treatment of choice for many, but the glucose content has been reduced and it is difficult for children to drink enough.

My DS has exceptionally well managed type one diabetes but insulin needs can vary by up to 300% day to day. Yesterday he needed less than 50% of the insulin he'd needed the day before and still needed approximately 100g of sugar over 24 hours to avoid serious issues despite reducing all his doses and suspending his insulin pump for part of the day.

What? @DappledThings not following you there?

DappledThings · 03/06/2019 18:30

pitterpatterbaby You said you'd seen something similar and were as mortified as the OP. But the OP wasn't mortified, she was angry and saddened. Which I understand (although not to the same degree maybe).

Unless you were the person putting the coke in the bottle I don't understand why you'd be embarrassed by someone else doing it.

BrylcreamBeret · 03/06/2019 18:34

My 6 year old has a tumbler of lemonade or Pepsi cola on 'special occasions'. I know this is shit but it's my decision. I'm hoping to encourae it my son to have a well rounded diet by not denying anything but by moderation. I know it's not great for babies to be guzzling the stuff from bottles but you can let this keep you awake at night when unfortunately there is far worse happening elsewhere.

To encourage can't let it fucking typos.
