Holiday accident

Please help me stay calm! First day of holiday, ds went to sleep, fell out of bed and has a massive lump appearing on his head. Cold compress not helping - massive lump and he's sleepy (up since 3am for flight yesterday, so not surprising, but still worrying). Went to reception and they've phoned a doctor. Help me wait and stop panicking! If we were at home, I'd have taken him to a+e just to be checked. Aaagh!

How old is your son? I'm no expert but I'm sure the fact a lump is appearing is a very good sign as I think it means it's swelling outwards rather than inwards. Like you say, he has good reason to be tired with the travel. I hope you can get some reassurance from the doctor soon Thanks

Myotherusernameisshy · 31/05/2019 00:00

Don’t worry you are doing everything right. A dr once told me that if the swelling was coming out into a big lump on the outside it was a good thing as less likely to be serious. And think of the ice creams he can eat tomorrow to help him feel better!

I wasn't sure if I had just thought that up but I was sure I'd heard it too 😆 thanks for confirming.

Oh no! How old is he? Im sure he’ll be ok. He’s not been sick or lost consciousness has he?
We’re just back from holiday today. Our second night, DS slipped and cracked his head on the tiles, blood everywhere. He wouldn’t let me take him to A&E as he was scared, and at 16 he was able to judge, but it shook me up.
I hope the doctor isn’t too long for you.
(My DS is absolutely fine now, btw)

NC4Now · 31/05/2019 00:04

Yes a lump is good. Heads are tougher than you think. The skull protects all the insides well.

Zorgothslugofdoom · 31/05/2019 00:27

Doctor just been - tested pupil reflex, reaction to light, etc. Feel a bit calmer - doctor said to wake him every 30 minutes to check for next couple of hours. If he gets worse, go to hospital for x-ray. Hate anything like this happening on holiday, as it's so different how to get medical help
At home, would just have gone to out of hours. We're all exhausted and just need some sleep - feel too sick with nerves for that!

DS is only 5 and is getting cross we keep waking him up! Thanks for the handhold. Got 20 min before next check- going to be a long night!

That sounds promising. And the fact he is getting annoyed at you waking him up sounds like another good sign.

Zorgothslugofdoom · 31/05/2019 00:34

I hope so! I'm normally quite calm at home when this sort of thing happens - I think being away from home makes me a bit of a panicker!

Outer lump is a good sign. Has been sick more than once ?

NC4Now · 31/05/2019 00:42

I totally understand. What are the sleeping arrangements? Can you have him with you, save yourself from having to get up?
If my DS was only five I’d have taken him. It’s hugely daunting when you’re away though. Sounds like he’ll be ok xx

Zorgothslugofdoom · 31/05/2019 00:47

He's in bed with me now. DH sat on balcony as too stressed to lie down. Going to snooze for 30 min until next check.

All seems fine- off to sleep now. Thanks for your support.

Hope everything went well last night and that your son is okay OP?

SunshineSpring · 31/05/2019 08:09

I'm guessing its morning now, but you dont actually need to wake him, just disturb him enough to see if he wriggles- so, move teddy, make sure he snuggles back with him sort of thing.

NC4Now · 31/05/2019 08:28

How’s he doing OP? And you? Are you in a different country? Hope you manage to get some rest and enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Zorgothslugofdoom · 31/05/2019 08:36

Thanks for all of your reassurances. He's awake and eating breakfast! Has an enormous bump on his head, which is going purple, but it doesn't hurt unless you poke it (apparently!). Hoping for no more incidents!
