Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blimey!!

Now I know the Grand National and Big Dipper have been there since Gods Dog, my own DF who is 85 was recollecting stories of riding them In the 50's and how 'bone shaker' they were then....

But NOTHING can have prepared me for the experience.

And they actually look in parts like old pallets and crates nailed together....

With bits missing!!

Any recollections??

I'm scared of big rides but remember going on some small rollercoaster called cat and mouse or some such and that felt like a couple of old wooden crates with a few nails and rubber bands.

barryfromclareisfit · 30/05/2019 23:19

Haven’t been for thirty years, but that sounds pretty much as I remember it

MarthasGinYard · 30/05/2019 23:23

Ursula

Mouse has recently been demolished. I never personally had the pleasure.

I seriously wonder if these other relics should follow....

Although the nostalgic part of me thinks NO!!

Barry

It seriously hasn't changed

Not one bit.

Shock

It sounds like it hasn't changed since the 70s when we had a family holiday there. I still haven't recovered, I haven't been on a roller coaster since Grin

AnneTwackie · 30/05/2019 23:31

Oh the bloody grand national! Absolutely did my back in on that bastard.

MarthasGinYard · 30/05/2019 23:33

DA

It has stood still in time since the 40's I'm sure.

The ride carriages even have velvet covering and padding

I'm actually relieved that Dd and myself emerged relatively unscathed

And she LOVED the steeplechase

Now that is really something else

I used to LOVE the Grand National. It was very bone-shaking. I don't think I'd be brave enough to go on it now ... although .... hmmm, a trip to Blackpool would be fun ...

MarthasGinYard · 30/05/2019 23:36

Anne

When we set off on the GN I actually thought No I must be imagining this.

I've sadly since read that years ago some poor man actually broke his neck on it.

I can actually quite believe it to

Cat and mouse. My god. My dad decided it looked ok for me (young child) and him. I think I had nightmares Grin
My neurosurgeon who operated on my herniated disc (not related!) muttered darkly about it when I asked if there was anything I shouldn't do after the surgery

Time40 · 30/05/2019 23:39

Oh god, OP - what happens on the Steeplechase? When you stand at the entrance, it's not really possible to see where the horses go, or what the ride is like. Do they strap you onto the horses at all? Do they go very high? Is it scary? I've always wanted to go on that, but because you can't quite tell what you'll be in for, I never have done. (For those who don't know what we're talking about, it's a ride with carousel-type horses that set off ... into the distance somewhere)

YesQueen · 30/05/2019 23:40

Steeplechase was also terrifying

floraloctopus · 30/05/2019 23:40

They are probably safer than more modern ones

Time40 · 30/05/2019 23:40

W-h-a-t?? Someone broke his neck on the GN? OK ... I won't even think about doing it again at my great age, then.

Kummerspeck · 30/05/2019 23:40

I love Blackpool Pleasure Beach! Those old rickety rides are so much more fun than the sanitized, big new ones!

YesQueen · 30/05/2019 23:41

@Time40 you basically have a seatbelt on, and it's not mega high but slightly scary still!

Time40 · 30/05/2019 23:41

The cat and mouse was foul. A really horrible ride.

Time40 · 30/05/2019 23:42

Thank you, YesQueen. If it's not mega high, I might give it a go. I've always wanted to!

MarthasGinYard · 30/05/2019 23:44

Time

I'm a veteran now

Well, rode it three times yesterday, in the rain Grin

Well, there is a seatbelt which kind of loosely drapes around you and then you're OFF

Holding on for dear life,

I've about 3 bruises to the hip area and nail marks from grip trauma.

You are right though, you've no idea what awaits. We only happened to glimpse this legend of a ride whilst viewing it from some hideous orange wooden 'children's' roller coaster in the Nickelodeon bit.

It was certainly an experience

Does anyone else like Twisters? Those rides with cars on big arms that just swish about on the flat in circles, but from side to side too? I LOVE LOVE LOVE those things. I want one for the garden. I'm the eccentric middle-aged woman in a car on her own, staying on for another ride ... and another ... and another.

piekebab · 30/05/2019 23:46

The Revolution ! Anyone remember the scouts eating their lunch on it on that programme that no one mentions anymore?

NC4Now · 30/05/2019 23:46

I’ve gone right off the Grand National since all the naturists rode it last month. The thought of all those bare bums all over it makes me shudder more than the ride itself, which is saying something.
My favourite was always the Space Invader but that’s gone now. There’s a new-ish Red Arrows ride which is good fun and the Big Dipper is a classic - especially when you fly off the seat.

NC4Now · 30/05/2019 23:48

piekebab yes!! I do. Loved the Revolution. The steps were a killer though. I always remember the notice at the top which said:
CAN YOU SURVIVE THE REVOLUTION?
And someone had written STEPS underneath 😂

managedmis · 30/05/2019 23:49

Is that clown still there?

YesQueen · 30/05/2019 23:49

Is the horror/scare thing still there where you stagger out into the pub at the end wide eyed with everyone laughing?
