Who killed Peter Pettigrew?

In the books! Participated in a "test the teacher" quiz at school recently and this was one of the questions! I said Voldemort because the silver hand that strangles Wormtail was made by Voldy and was essentially punishing him for his weakness / hesitation...but I got it wrong and was told he killed himself!! Was I wrong?

Ooh that’s a tricky one, I’d have said both were acceptable!

What does Google sat?

userabcname · 30/05/2019 19:37

Well I googled and it said Peter is killed by the hand Voldy gave him...didn't say who was to blame as 'twere. But he didn't intend to strangle himself did he? Unless I've read it wrong. I shall have to read again!

I would say Voldemort too- he was the one who cursed the hand.

He kind of killed himself. Peter chose to repay his debt to Harry by betraying Voldemort. The hand strangled Peter after this betrayal.

User10fuckingmillion · 30/05/2019 19:45

I think it all depends on whether you think he was bright enough to know what would happen when he betrayed Voldemort

Bunnyhop1502 · 30/05/2019 19:45

I think he was killed by his own conscious. His mercy in that moment was sensed by the hand and interpreted as weakness.

DeadDoorpost · 30/05/2019 19:50

He killed himself. Harry saved his like in PoA and then when they went to escape and he caught them in DH Harry reminded him of it. Pettigrew knew what would be in store for him if he let them go and then went back to Voldemort empty handed and so chose the easiest option for him, I guess.

And seeing as the hand was a magical hand, once he'd made the decision that was it. No going back.

It mentions he had a look of surprise on his face iirc at the hand acting that way and I reckon it's because he wasn't expecting to make the decision and go through with it. Remember; he was notorious for flipping on his friends and anyone else he could.

Yes it's the look of surprise that sticks with me - I suppose he didn't intentionally kill himself (it wasn't suicide) but his actions made it happen so technically he was to blame....interesting!
