The only one I can think of for myself is "Goodnight Mr Tom", when Zach dies, but especially when Willie has to leave to go back to London Sad

Actually loads of Jaqueline Wilson books were really upsetting. Those nice bright covers suggested they were suitable for younger children then they were I think. Or that they would be happy.
Dustbin Baby: ‘Mummy’ commits suicide in the bath
Kiss: Carl self harming with his glass collection because he’s being bullied for being gay
Cookie: awful abusive father

waves to @SimplySteveReddux**
Yay, another Eddings fan!

A Court of Thorns and Roses book 3 ( wings and ruin) made me sob. Twice.

The last book in the Giver series (Messenger) did too. In front of a class. Not my best moment.

Gangsta Granny

I'm taking notes here - excellent thread!

One book springs to mind instantly for me - The Time Traveller's Wife. I was on a flight to Boston and have the clearest memory of sobbing silently in a darkened plane cabin.

Paper Dolls is the worst book of all for making me dissolve in tears though - so hard to read that one without a sob catching in my throat.

I've added a few of these suggestions to my reading list - The End of the Affair sounds like a must-read, and When Breath Becomes Air.

PepsiLola · 30/05/2019 20:26

My sisters keeper. I never watched the movie cause of how much I cried from the book

SunshineCake · 30/05/2019 20:27

Asa child, Black Beauty. What happened came as a shock.

justasking111 · 30/05/2019 20:30

Maggie s brother Stu death in the thornbirds . The war horse Anne of green gables books. Bits of the women's room. When the whales came. I can surprise myself with an unexpected catch of grief reading

UrbanMage · 30/05/2019 20:32

Oh and I wept at "Asking for It" by Louise O'Neill. Powerful. Horrible but necessary content, but if I ever have a son, he is going to read it.

milkshak3 · 30/05/2019 20:32

Tortilla Flat
The God of small things

LaMarschallin · 30/05/2019 20:33

@ProperVexed

The Chamber by John Grisham. I sat in the garden and sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. Odd really. It was about a ku klux clan member going to death row. He was guilty. He knew the penalty and accepted it.
It was so powerful that it changed my opinion on the death sentence

I'm not much of a crier but I absolutely agree with your last sentence. Had exactly that effect on me.

beanaseireann · 30/05/2019 20:33

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Panticles · 30/05/2019 20:34

Any of the St Mary’s books by Jodie Taylor. There you are laughing with Max and then boom. Please just her keep Leon and Matthew.

greentreeseverywhere · 30/05/2019 20:35

the pact - Jodie picoult
one day - David Nicholls 😭😭

Fruityb · 30/05/2019 20:36

A Monster Calls - Patrick Ness

It was so emotional at the end - I was a sobbing mess before I even got there. I cannot bring myself to watch it yet.

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 30/05/2019 20:37

The hand that first held mine
And, incredibly, the lorax. I used to read it to DS when he was little but I had to add extra bits on because it upset him so much. I added a bit where the trees grow back and all the creatures return. My chapter didn't rhyme and was dire but we both liked it

HarrietSchulenberg · 30/05/2019 20:38

Before I Say Goodbye by Ruth Picardie. Read it when pregnant with ds1 and it seared me.

All Quiet on the Western Front. Read it at school in second year but we didn't finish it before the end of term. I sneaked into the library to read the end of it and sat at the table trying to hide the tears dripping onto the book.

PCohle · 30/05/2019 20:41

Little women.

Ridingthegravytrain · 30/05/2019 20:42

Monte Walsh when his horse dies at the end

AlwaysColdHands · 30/05/2019 20:42

Also Before I Say Goodbye, Ruth Picardie Not been able to read it since having DC’s. Absolutely heartbreaking

SimplySteveRedux · 30/05/2019 20:42

@UrbanMage hah, so obvious?

Apanicaday · 30/05/2019 20:43

On the Beach also gets me - even thinking about it makes me sad - and I don't generally cry at books.

I used to cry every time at monkey puzzle by Julia Donaldson when ds was little - hormones I think!

HiItsClemFandango · 30/05/2019 20:43

I finished Me Before You today and cried for a good 30 minutes

thedishonthecoffeetable · 30/05/2019 20:44

Loads over the years but recently
A Man Called Ove
Allegiant - the 3rd book in the Divergent trilogy. Film of the same only goes up to halfway through the book so film doesn't have the same sad ending as the book.

heartshapedknob · 30/05/2019 20:45

The bit in Fool’s Errand where Nighteyes does. Beautifully written and heartbreaking.

Another one that sobbed throughout a Monster Calls too.

Willow2017 · 30/05/2019 20:45

Little Women when Beth dies.
Charlotte's Web
The Velveteen Rabbit (read it once to.kids and never again)
Watership Down.
