The only one I can think of for myself is "Goodnight Mr Tom", when Zach dies, but especially when Willie has to leave to go back to London Sad

Harry Potter

ilovecatsabittoomuch · 05/06/2019 23:28

Oh my gosh goodnight mr Tom too!

Cakeandmarshmallows · 05/06/2019 23:28

@rosybell Oh my goodness, I had forgotten this book but you reminded me and how much that book made me cry!

rosybell · 06/06/2019 09:01

@cakeandmarshmallows - I have never met anyone else who read it! But it is such a beautifully told story, I really related to Anna despite not having a disabled sibling. I think I might have to re-read it..

thewalrus · 06/06/2019 10:00

Lots of the above!
Wonder - when the dog dies
The Silver Sword - when they leave the dog
Dogger

I am unable to read Owl Babies (And She Came!) or The Tiger Who Came to Tea ('and all the streetlamps were lit...and they walked down the road to a café) without at least a lump in my throat.

Books that I don't think have been mentioned that have had me properly snotty crying:
The One Plus One (Jojo Moyes)
Don't Ask Me Why (Tania Kindersley)
Unless (Carol Shields)

Also, in a different category as a true story, I recently read The Last Act of Love by Cathy Retzenbrink. Might have been the most moving thing I have ever read. Devastating.

doggyg · 06/06/2019 10:47

I've cried at so many books over the years but ones that stick in my mind that I've read recently are
The After Wife - Cass Hunter
How to be happy - Eva Woods
I Heart Hawaii - Lindsey Kelk

thewalrus - I just cried reading the synopsis for The Last Act of Love!

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 06/06/2019 11:11

I always cry at I Capture The Castle - the part where Mrs Blossom leaves. There’s just something about that moment that breaks me, the way it shows the loss of innocence and the fracturing of Rose and Cassandra’s relationship. Tears every time!

Cakeandmarshmallows · 06/06/2019 21:55

@rosybell also never met anyone who has read it before but it was a very moving story, stayed with me for long time.

Cakeandmarshmallows · 06/06/2019 21:58

Also The boy in the bubble' I think going adult and the boy had to live in a plastic 'bubble' due to immune issues, it was about a friendship between two teenagers and was bea, but so sad..I have a feeling they made a film with a similar story but it was awful!!!

Goodbye Mog, makes me weep evertime!!
Dogger, his big sister is so lovely!
The velveteen Rabbit! Toys are Real!!!

I'm sure there are others!

Happyinheels · 06/06/2019 22:10

My Sisters Keeper

MsAwesomeDragon · 06/06/2019 22:19

Anything by Michael Morpurgo. He can't seem to write a happy book, or even a book where there are fewer than 5 tragedies. DD loves them and reads them to me as her reading homework, and then she looks at me like I've grown an extra head as I sob. "Running wild" got me terribly, it's about a boy and an elephant, and within the first 3 chapters I'd cried 5 times Blush

Taffeta · 06/06/2019 22:22

Only kid's books make me cry for some reason Confused

The Happy Prince
The Apple Pip Princess
The Velveteen Rabbit

TheAngryLlama · 06/06/2019 22:24

The death of Helen in Jane Eyre is terrible especially when you know it’s basically all about the death of Charlotte’s sisters.
In the same vein The Life of Charlotte Bronte made me cry, where Anne dies at Scarborough and Charlotte buries her and then goes home, the last survivor. Oh god. It’s terrible

Dr Zeus-Oh the places you will go

PulyaSochsup · 06/06/2019 22:29

David Copperfield, when his mother died and he described her dead baby being buried with her, again when he reached his aunt's house and when Emily is found abroad. I have read it three times though so I think I must enjoy the melancholy!

NCbilliontimes · 06/06/2019 22:34

The Good Women of China

I was only 18/19 when I read it, it changed me. Very powerful. I still think about it now.

Singingcricket · 06/06/2019 22:43

Oscar Wilde, The Selfish Giant

stopgocar · 06/06/2019 22:49

After You'd Gone - Maggie O'Farrell

Also sobbed at the Time Traveller's Wife and Never Let Me Go.

dontforgettheyellowbird · 06/06/2019 22:51

Archipelago by Monica Roffey and The World According to Garp by John Irving

SilviaSalmon · 06/06/2019 22:58

Testament of Youth by Vera Britton.

I read it whilst at Oxford so it really resonated. All the men she grew up with and loved being slaughtered one after the other.
Most distressing book I have ever read.

Princessdebthe1st · 06/06/2019 23:38

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness is an astounding and heartbreaking book. It SHOULD NOT be read in public. I made the mistake of reading the penultimate chapter in a restaurant whilst having dinner and cried so much the waitress asked me if I was OK. I went back to my hotel room (I was away at a conference) to read the last chapter and sobbed uncontrollably into my pillow for ages.
The history of the book and its authors add to the sadness (Ness wrote the book after the author who first came up with the concept, Siobhan Dowd, died from cancer). It is a difficult read as it deals with a child losing his mother who is dying but is beautiful at the same time.

PierreBezukov · 09/06/2019 22:13

Prairie Fires - a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Her real life was far more difficult than the books she wrote for children. So much hardship, and so sad when she had to leave her family and childhood and whole life behind in De Smet in the hope of a better life.

Storminateacup74 · 09/06/2019 22:30

A little life, 3 things about Elsie and the tattooist of Aushwitz because it was actually based on real events you couldn't just think it was a story. Haven't read The boy in the striped pyjamas but watched the film last weekend- so moving and emotional
