The only one I can think of for myself is "Goodnight Mr Tom", when Zach dies, but especially when Willie has to leave to go back to London Sad

The nightingale and the great alone...both by Kristin Hannah. And I'm not a crier!!

OriginofSpecies · 30/05/2019 16:09

I remember sobbing on the train reading the end of The Go-Between. The end of Atonement similarly got me. I think for both books I was so immersed in the story, that the endings released loads of pent up emotion in me!

CostanzaG · 30/05/2019 16:10

Oh and I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of Clare McIntosh's new book 'after the end' ....... absolutely fantastic and incredibly emotional. I also cried at that - maybe I'm more emotional than I thought!!

Itsjeremycorbynsfault · 30/05/2019 16:14

All quiet on the western front

Eminybob · 30/05/2019 16:16

One day
The boy in the striped pyjamas

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 30/05/2019 16:16

"The Heart's Invisible Furies."

There have been others, but I can't remember them. I do recall crying at the end of "Possession" but I've forgotten why. I think I feel emotional when I've loved a very long book and I've come to the end.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Howard Fry ... when it was revealed towards the end that his son had died by suicide . I still remember that every so often , and start to cry again .

Goodnight Mr Tom when he calls him dad . I can’t watch the film as end up sobbing .

Myscarfisblue · 30/05/2019 16:17

The Nightingale most recently
A Thousand Splendid Suns
A little Life
Kite Runner
Birdsong
Northern Light
The Railway Man
A Fine Balance - proper head on the table sobbing

I'm about to finish All the Light we Cannot See and suspect similar

Watership Down nearly killed me when I was about 12 as did Black Beauty

Myscarfisblue · 30/05/2019 16:18

Oh yes, All Quiet on the Western Front

Rua13 · 30/05/2019 16:18

Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck.

Mof3K · 30/05/2019 16:19

The Goldfinch.

Interestingly the trailer for the film has just been released it looks incredible

WhereForArtThouBray · 30/05/2019 16:20

I was going to say Good night Mr Tom. That was my absolute favourite ever book as a child.

The green mile is heart breaking, My sisters Keeper and the last one in the Maze Runner series.

Rhiannon87 · 30/05/2019 16:23

A book called No Run Intended and its sequel Run Intended. Absolutely awesome, really easy reads by a woman called Hanmah Phillips.

Jojoanna · 30/05/2019 16:24

Ode to billy Joel I was sobbing ,, although I was only 16

ClannLir · 30/05/2019 16:26

So I Am Glad by AL Kennedy.

AloneLonelyLoner · 30/05/2019 16:27

Another vote for The End of the Affair. That killed me and even mentioning it now makes me go a little funny.

I need a good cry actually so maybe I'll read some of these. Thanks!

BishopofBathandWells · 30/05/2019 16:27

One Day was a rollercoaster. Cried on the train reading it.

The Book Thief.

City of Thieves by David Benioff. Christ, that had me good. That was another "crying on public transport" book.

Lovestonap · 30/05/2019 16:30

Goodnight Mr Tom
How Green was my Valley
The Jersey literary potato peel pie society

Also as a teenager the bit in 'flowers in the attic' where she dreams of her dead father and baby brother.

Yiayoula · 30/05/2019 16:35

The Subtle Knife ( Hester Shock... and Lee Scoresby...)

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.

And YY to The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 30/05/2019 16:36

Oh God I loved The Goldfinch MOF3K, I must try and find this film trailer, I do hope it lives up to my memories of that book

Womblesmurf · 30/05/2019 16:42

This...

What books have made you REALLY REALLY cry?
Outoutout · 30/05/2019 16:43

The Unbearable lightness of Being.

Several places, but the scene when the dog Karenin is dying, made me bawl. And the perfect descriptions of the love between Thomas and Tereza.

Also the last chapter, and the very last line of the book, it just brings the whole saga to such a beautiful ending.

AllOverIt · 30/05/2019 16:45

Atonement. Ian McEwan. 😢

fudgesmummy · 30/05/2019 16:47

@Lozz22
I agree with the Cathy Glass books, I always cry how ever many times I read them!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 30/05/2019 16:50

A Thousand Splendid Suns.
