Hi, baby is 9month. Still fully breastfeeding as he won't take a bottle.
I've got mastitis, had the shakes, fever etc so been and got antibiotics yesterday.
Yesterday that side wasn't red today half of my boob is red. Yesterday it was just veru swollen and painful.
What can I do to ease pain? Recover quicker etc
Thank you

Antibiotics! Ring the GP now.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 29/05/2019 14:01

Sorry I did not read that already have them.

MrsGrannyWeatherwax · 29/05/2019 14:02

If it gets worse rather than better with antibiotics you need to be seen again! Please don’t leave it.

Hot water, feeding, expressing on the affected side can all help plus rest and lots of fluids.

I had a hot shower last night and that helped a little. I'm no longer shaking like yesterday but do still feel cold.
I'm alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen to keep me going.

Antibiotics were only started yesterday. I've had 5 so far.

If you have a blocked duct (where the pain started) try vibrating towards the nipple with an electric toothbrush, then feeding / expressing. Really helps

Ouchie1 · 29/05/2019 16:18

I will try that thank you.
If I'm not feeling any better by tomorrow goinf to try and see the gp again

Still have temp with ibuprofen in me

It sounds awful and painful years ago we were told to put hot flannels on it. I’m sure you need more than that but worth a try 💐

Ouchie1 · 29/05/2019 18:24

Went back to gp
Was an elderly one so don't think he could hear my properly as he kept asking the same questions
It looks more red than yesterday.
He had a little look and gave more antibiotics
He said if it gets worse go to the hospital

I was told to put cold Savoy cabbage leaves in my bra. I did, mild comfort for about two minutes until they got warm. Antibiotics worked for me but if they don't kick in soon, go back. My mum had a huge abscess and had to have it lanced ,she said the relief was amazing.

Hope you feel better. Mastitis is horrendous.

billybagpuss · 30/05/2019 14:29

If you try the Savoy cabbage break the spine a bit first to let the juices run, its a traditional relief used for arthritis.

listsandbudgets · 30/05/2019 15:14

OP I feel for you. I couldn't believe how painful mastitis was and the fever was awful. You must he feeling miserable

I can't add much more to the excellent advice above but I hope its better soon. Hopefully the second batch of antibiotics will deal with it

A I can add sounds ridiculous. Run a deep warm bath and go own on all 4s in it with your boobs dangling into the water. I cant even remember who suggested it to me but bizarrely it helped even if it wasn't very elegant!!

Ouchie1 · 30/05/2019 19:02

Mum Was saying sit in the bath rather than have a shower so will try that thank you

Gp suggested wearing a tight supportive bra that will help.
Tbf the bra im wearing today wasn't the best fit but it was the first 1 I laid my hands on lol

I thought the Savoy cabbage reduced supply??

I’ve had mastitis a few times and baths helped, massage the breast whilst in the bath, cabbage leaves straight from the fridge and inside your bra, ibuprofen and paracetamol in between, hot water bottle, immediately followed by freezing cold compress and feeding the baby from that side as much as possible (although you probably don’t want to as it’s not nice).

Hope it clears soon xxx

listsandbudgets · 31/05/2019 15:57

How are you now OP.... presumably covered in cabbage juice, variously cuddling up to hot and cold packs, swinging your tits about in warm water and generally cursing mumsnetters

I hope youre feeling better

Celeriacacaca · 31/05/2019 16:00

You poor thing. I had this once and it was horrible. A very kind breastfeeding counsellor literally gently kneaded my breasts for more than an hour as I had the shakes etc and was in a terrible state. The massage really helped and this was followed by strong antibiotics. She just used her knuckles and gently applied them in a sort of rolling motion.

Hope you're better soon.

Ouchie1 · 31/05/2019 18:59

Had a good laugh at that listsandbuckets thank you was well needed.
Pain wise it seems to be settling but I feel so drained and tired it's unbelievable. Feel like there's not an ounce of energy in me. Keep sweating too. Not got a temp today and the redness has gone which is good
