Flying hand luggage - liquids panic!

iamclaireandfleabag · 28/05/2019 20:44

I'm going away for 4 days with hand luggage only. I am totally panicking re liquids! I can cope buying shower gel and deodorant over there but when I add up all my face products, hair styling bits and make up I just can't fit everything within the limit no matter how small I try and decant everything. Any experienced travellers out there who can advise?

Weight limit for luggage you mean?

LoisLittsLover · 28/05/2019 20:51

Buy it in boots after security

QOD · 28/05/2019 20:52

10 x 100 mls allowance.
List what you need?

Well it’s quite simple! Take less stuff, buy it in boots once you’re through, or check a bag in!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/05/2019 20:53

Are you traveling with a partner/kids?

BlueSkiesLies · 28/05/2019 20:53

Also get one of these as you can cram way more in than the shitty zip lock bags that break and open.

Also, it’s a risk, but you can take two bags and put them in different trays... if you get caught you’ll loose you’re stuff tho.

Pinkmexicanskull · 28/05/2019 20:54

Go to home bargains and get some cheap plastic bottles to decant. Observe what you actually use today/tomorrow when getting ready. Don’t panic too much re powders, as in my experience they never pull those aside when going through secturity. Buy deodorant and shower gel at Boots on other side but just decant the expensive stuff like face moisturiser into a tiny tub!

Likethebattle · 28/05/2019 20:54

Soap, I buy bars of Dettol sensitive rather than shower gel. Tiny, light and won’t leak, ditto solid shampoo bars and solid ‘stick’ deodorant from Mitchum. All of these are light and hand luggage friendly. I bought sun lotion in resort this year and a massive bottle cost €5. Or all agree to take 2-3 things each and share,

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/05/2019 20:56

You need to think smart. Solid stick for deodorant. Soap instead of shower gel. Facial wipes instead of cleanser. Trim your make-up down to the essentials. Take trial sizes for as many things as you can then you'll be under the 1 litre limit.

Or just buy it after security/at your destination or check a bag in.

HelmutFrontbut · 28/05/2019 20:57

I put my foundation and hair serum into those tiny little plastic pots, it's enough for four days.

Security doesn't seem to bother too much these days about liquids and the one litre maximum rule; I've flown four times in the last six months with hand luggage only and most people seem to leave liquids inside their bags.

VelvetSpoon · 28/05/2019 21:00

I flew recently hand luggage only for 4 days - as a pp said I took bars of soap and shampoo. In my liquids I had 2 mini bottles of sun cream 100ml each, 100ml of conditioner, a small toothpaste, deodorant (could have bought a stick one but I'm not a massive fan of them), mascara, nail varnish, aftersun, body lotion and a mini bottle of concentrated squash (as I hate plain water).

I don't wear foundation in summer and don't use moisturiser so that probably helps. But it's definitely doable.

Really??!!! Where have you been flying from?? In my experience (I fly 1-2 times a month) the UK airports I go through are super-hot on liquids/pastes. I've seen quite a few women being pulled to one side at London City for leaving a lipstick in their handbag rather putting it in the plastic bag. U.S. airports don't seem to care so much unless it's a bottle of water or something really obvious.

pineapplebryanbrown · 28/05/2019 21:03

What do you need that is liquid/ish:

Foundation
Lipstick
Eyeliner
Mascara
Eyeshadow crayon
Hair serum

Anything else?

VelvetSpoon · 28/05/2019 21:03

We flew from Stansted where they check your bags pretty closely - saw one lady told to take stuff out of her clear bag as it wouldn't close, and stuff being confiscated as over 100ml. That said in Palma on the way back they scanned it all through in our suitcases and we didn't have to separate liquids.

dementedma · 28/05/2019 21:04

London City are uber fussy and generally bad tempered with it. Not a job I would fancy mind you.

TapasForTwo · 28/05/2019 21:04

Do you really need all of those liquids and potions for just 4 days?
Soap instead of shower gel
Solid stick antipersirant - although it will get counted as a liquid
Solid bar of shampoo (Lush)
Bare Minerals or similar make up
Can you wear your hair in a more simple way not to necessitate lots of styling products?

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/05/2019 21:06

Very true. At least you can usually get a smile - and even a chat - out of most of the Heathrow guys.

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2019 21:11

We almost only fly from Manchester, where they are not just concerned about the size of mini bottles or plain bottles you decant into, but also that the volume is printed on it. And a half empty 200ml bottle does not count as a 100 ml bottle.

iamclaireandfleabag · 28/05/2019 21:14

Things I can buy easily the other side;
Shampoo
Conditioner
Hairspray
Shower gel
Sun cream

Things I can't risk using anything different as will come out in rashes or spots so must pack;

Face wash
Toner
Moisturiser
Under eye cream
Anti spot cream
Foundation
Mascara
Shimmery highlighter stuff
Lipstick
Body lotion

All other make up is in powder form so fc that's ok I think

Yes, they are very strict in Manchester. OH is inclined to be forgetful, and forgot to take his liquids out of the bag. He was pulled to one side and searched. The bag was scanned, emptied, and scanned again. This was two weeks ago.

iamclaireandfleabag · 28/05/2019 21:15

@TapasForTwo my hair is short but unruly - it needs a lot of stuff to keep it under control!

OP posts:
iamclaireandfleabag · 28/05/2019 21:17

Oh forgot I can buy toothpaste but I also need to add hair wax/gel on my must list.
I think I may need to check a bag, this is going to be impossible!!

Put as much in your hand luggage as possible.

So I take face wipes instead of cleansing lotion.

And stick deodorant instead of roll-on deodorant.

And compact/mineral foundation instead of liquid foundation.

Lipstick, gel eyeliner, concealer and mascara always goes in my hand luggage and I’ve never had any problems at security.

If you have any little sample sachets of product hanging around I find those squeeze into your liquids bag very easily.

And I use tiny little pots to decant things like face serum and face scrub into, as I find the pots you get in Superdrug etc are too big for things like that.

Dafspunk · 28/05/2019 21:18

The staff at London City are absolute arseholes.

Have a great holiday OP.

TapasForTwo · 28/05/2019 21:18

Can you manage without the eye cream and highlighter just for 4 days?
