Anyone had a postpartum womb infection?

Went to the docs today for 6 week check and when she examined my abdomen I was practically screaming. I told her I had been feeling really quite sore and how the bleeding suddenly became very heavy, much heavier than what my period is like and wondering if it was my period which had arrived. I never had a gap between the lochia and period If it is indeed my period. She checked my heart rate and it was 98. No temp at the time but I have been feeling generally unwell and put it down to c section recovery. She said she thinks I have an infection in the womb and started me on co-amoxiclav. To be reviewed on Thursday.

I don't have a spleen and I've just read that diabetes and anaemia put you at increased risk of this infection. I had both during the pregnancy. The iron was so low I had a transfusion just before EMCS.

Anyway since the examination the pain has ramped up massively - I've ran out of tramadol and took a dihydrocodeine and ibuprofen which isn't touching the pain at all. I can't get into a deep sleep and will phone GP in the morning.

Just wanted to hear other people's experiences?

You poor thing. You sound very very unwell and I'm toying with the idea of suggesting you call 111 now vs the GP in the morning. I suppose it depends whether you have any out of hours open atm.

I had endometritis (not endometriosis) post partum. I was totally wiped out and remember not being able to get out of bed. My bleeding had gone quite yellow and smelly and I had the most god awful tummy pain. My daughter was admitted to hospital at 4 days old and I remember nearly passing out from dizziness. The staff told me to go to MAU but the walk to the other side of the hospital nearly made me pass out - I remember walking doubled over. I was given antibiotics and painkillers. I then had a further 2 courses of antibiotics as it just didn't clear up. That was at only 4 days postpartum so god knows what you're feeling like at 6 weeks. However I'm not convinced it's the same thing. What you are describing sounds like when my friend had retained products. I'm not sure if MAU would see you at 6 weeks pp but I would give them a call and you should be able of do that now (ours are open all hours).

Any pain getting worse and not better needs seeing to urgently. Hope you feel better soon.

I had a huge bleed at 2 weeks post partum. I thought I was haemorraging. They took me back in and I was put on a drip. It turned out I had retained products and an infection. I had to stop in over night. I was then given two lots of antibiotics to come home with.

Are retained products not unlikely with a c section? I didn't even consider that. My whole abdomen is so tender, even holding ds is sore. I'm waiting for a call back from the GP this morning. Eventually managed to get some sleep

Yes, but it was picked up less than a day after I'd given birth so I was still in hospital.
I needed a week of IV antibiotics and then another week of tablets which had to be continued as it came back.

MaverickSnoopy · 28/05/2019 11:40

It's absolutely possible to have retained products are a cesarean. It's a case of the surgeon leaving a trapped piece behind without realising.

Something is going on. In my case each course of antibiotics improved things gradually but not enough by the end of each course until I'd completed 3 courses. In your case, you are getting worse. So maybe you need stronger antibiotics or its something more serious than an infection.

KnifeAngel · 28/05/2019 11:47

Mine was after EMCS I think it's quite common.

PotteringAlong · 28/05/2019 11:47

Have they called you back? How are you?

comparisonisthethiefofjoy · 28/05/2019 21:29

I was asked to go in to be re-examined so went late afternoon. They prescribed painkillers and want to see me again on Thursday. Temp was ok.

To top it all the baby isn't feeding well at all today (silent reflux) - he's had 11oz so far. So they saw him too - he examined well. They suggested he may be coming down with something and to keep a close eye. Came home to my toddler with a sniffly nose 🙄

Tomorrow is a new day

I had a uterine infection two days after giving birth. I suddenly felt very faint, hot, sick and shaky at home and managed to get an emergency appointment at the doctors.

I had a high temp and unbearable when examined. I was given two lots of antibiotics and the midwife also checked me again her next few visits.

It's not nice and I really struggled to look after my baby as I felt so poorly. If family and friends can help, take their help and feel better Thanks

I had this and it was retained placenta after bleeding got heavier and abdomen tender
I was admitted for D&C when DS2 was 10 days

Gamorasgran · 29/05/2019 07:51

Yes I did. Remember arguing we dh as he thought I was trying to stay in bed when it wast my 'turn' (ah those lovely new born daysWink) and him being quite shocked that the gp told us to go straight to a&e.......

2 lots of heavy duty antibiotics required to shift it. Very very tender, increased bleeding and I started to get a real fever too. This was after a c section but I think about 3 weeks after birth.

You have my sympathy and get well soon.

Dipdedickindetol · 29/05/2019 08:04

Yep, blood clots the size of my fist about five days after giving birth. Got advice from medic friend and insisted on a swab to id the cause - amoxicil stuff didn't touch it but when the culture came back they got me onto the right antibiotics and it shifted. You need to watch if you're bf.
