Holiday destination help!

I'm looking for inspiration... we want to book for 5-6 nights (just me and DH), travelling on Monday 17th (so quite soon...). We need a mix of relaxation, but also stuff to do. A bit of culture, or nature, or beautiful landscape. Ideally coastal (we're landlocked at home, so I need to see the sea). Don't want to go as far as Greece/Canaries - looking for a shorter flight than that.

So - where's my holiday this year...?

The Monday departure seems to be a bit limiting - going earlier than that is not possible. We can fly from Luton, LHR, LGW or Bham though.

We went to Mallorca for the equivalent week last year, and stayed in a tiny village. Was perfect, but don't want to repeat the same trip. Seville is tempting, but can't find flights (and it's not coastal).

Nice, south of France.

WeeM · 27/05/2019 23:19

Have you thought about Montenegro? It’s really lovely, or Croatia.

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 27/05/2019 23:24

I saw Montenegro when I was perusing Voyage Prive for inspiration earlier. It did seem to fit the bill. Any specific places you'd recommend?

We enjoyed a week near Nice about 10 yrs ago... maybe we should go back...

I was going to suggest Nice too. Or Barcelona.

floraloctopus · 27/05/2019 23:39

Iceland, it's just over 2 hours on the plane.

floraloctopus · 27/05/2019 23:39

OK so it's 5 hours...it didn't feel that long! Grin
It's well worth it.

floraloctopus · 27/05/2019 23:41

^ God I give up 3 hours not 5 - typo again.

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 27/05/2019 23:50

Iceland is very much on the 'to do' list, but in the winter.

Barcelona could be an option - we've been before, but not for years!

Iceland is lovely in winter and summer, I've done both and it's been amazing.

Davros · 27/05/2019 23:55

Austria. Ski resorts in the summer are amazing. No sea but lovely lakes

DeRigueurMortis · 27/05/2019 23:59

What about Malta?

The capital Valletta is beautiful and you get a good mix of city and sea.

Lots of stunning medieval architecture (lots of history re: Knights Templar).

I went a few years ago and loved it.

The grand harbour is an incredible vista and it's a fabulous place to just walk around and soak in the sights, but there's plenty to do/see when you're there.

Montenegro, we were in Kotor a few years back had a lovely time Inc day trip to dubrovnik. Flew EasyJet Gatwick to Tivat. Think they only fly that route Mondays and Thursdays so 6/7 days wouldn't work.
Was back there a couple of weeks ago, just overnight after doing Belgrade to Bar train, and would say avoid Budva, looked like an over developed Spanish Costa del Sol resort, but other places looked great (Petrovac especially)

WeeM · 28/05/2019 23:06

Kotor we were in too. My friend has been too and did a bit of travelling about and loved it.

RiftGibbon · 28/05/2019 23:08

Wales! Although might be a little chilly in the evenings.

What about somewhere down the coast from Barcelona? We stayed at Castelldefels a few years ago. It was 30 mins into the city on the train. We alternated having lazy days on the beach with books and visits into the city. There’s a long beach and some lovely restaurants. Mostly Spanish tourists rather than Brits. There are lots of other places along the coast line there.

PenguinsRabbits · 29/05/2019 05:12

Norway fjords and a lot of wildlife like reindeer, moose, otters, puffins, seals and some Viking culture. Alesund and / or Bergen

PenguinsRabbits · 29/05/2019 05:14

or Gibraltar?

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 07/06/2019 12:10

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions - provided plenty of food for thought.
We have finally booked... to go to Frigiliana in Spain (just down the coast from Malaga). The Monday morning flight criteria was a major determinant, and my friend has been there 4 times and raves about it, so it should be lovely.
