Severe sore throat, just a small patch on one side?

Battling off another bug courtesy of toddlers and nursery. Now on day 10 of this one. Generally feeling better but have awful sore throat - weird thing is that it’s very focussed in one place, like there’s one small patch that’s excruciatingly painful and the rest doesn’t hurt at all. Swallowing and coughing causes awful pain in that one small spot.

Had my tonsils out as a kid so it’s not those. What could cause this? My glands have been up on that side but they’re not too bad now.

Sounds like strep throat. Like a razor in your throat every time you swallow ?

Haggisfish · 27/05/2019 19:15

Could still be tonsillitis which is often caused by bacteria as above. Can you see any white spots?

Lemonsquinky · 27/05/2019 19:15

You can get ulcers in your throat.

Yep, like a razor, but also like there’s something raised there - the painful bit is really well defined, I can point to where it would be inside my throat, and it feels round if that makes any sense.

Balls. I’ve already had two bacterial infections in the last couple of months and really don’t want any more antibiotics! Will call GP in the morning.

I’ve had a look in the mirror but my tongue is in the way!

Could be thrush or an ulcer.

Also, can you push tongue down with spoon etc? I had loads of white spots but had to really push tongue down to see them.

I had a cold sore on the back of my throat once- it was AGONY!!! And very localised in one small patch.

TammySwansonTwo · 27/05/2019 20:29

Ouch! I do get cold sores but IME they’re a different kind of pain (although maybe it would feel different in your throat!)

Will try and use a spoon to look
