Can your gut instinct ever be wrong?

Just that really. Have the wishes of the head overruled the gut and been correct?

I'm in a situation (job) whereby I should have listened to my gut in the first instance and not taken it, but, my head is telling me (still telling me) that I should be sensible and carry on. Aarggh!

I'd be interested to hear what folk think about this, have you ever proved yourself wrong and not gone with gut instinct on something?

Not on jobs no. All I’ve done is gone against my instinct, stayed too long and been miserableness

Interesting, this is how I feel and how I fear I'm going to feel, iyswim (although I'm already there, hence my asking).

Yes all the time, but I think it depends on the situation really- are you an anxious person OP? I am and I often find my snap 'gut' reactions are based on anxiety- fear of change desire for stability, whatever it is, and those thoughts permeate what does and doesn't feel right.

Of course it 'can' be wrong, it's pretty heavily open to bias in that way and unless you actually are a psychic, you can never know what will happen. Though again, preconceived strong feelings something is right or wrong or good or bad will surely affect how you feel about them when you do them.

I honestly find it more useful to set 'head vs heart' vague concepts aside and make decisions based on what is going to leave me feeling happiest and most content without selling myself short, or losing what could be a good opportunity.

Why do you feel your new job was a mistake? Smile

Yes it can be wrong! Especially if your an anxious person anyway.

Have you actually given the new job a chance? How long and you done the job, if you’ve been there 2 weeks do nothing yet if you’ve been doing it a year and hate it then start looking for something else

I wouldn't describe myself as anxious, but I am driven to try and be the best I can be which I suppose puts pressure on me to be perfect (I use that word loosely, I know nobody is perfect). There was just something that didn't sit right from the interview until now, it's quite a chaotic atmosphere no real management, nice colleagues though. Been in the job eight months so far. Thanks for your advice.

I think gut instinct can be wrong, especially if someone is over nervous or in a situation that very strange/culturally different to them. However, I would listen to mine! I once turned down the job which seemed great just because something didn't sit right about the place... right decision! Later discovered the boss was always on to everyone - hence everyone was very nervous and constantly worried.

I think the gut instinct is linked to the soul. The mind and sensible logic often overrides what the soul wants. I like to pull it back where I can and listen to the soul because I believe it keeps me healthy. The soul has a wisdom all of its own and knows what's best for you.

My gut instinct is often wrong as I am a naturally anxious person so my instincts are that of a nervous animal and not particularly reliable. My last job felt right at interview and turned out to be not good. This current one, I was terrified for the first few weeks, until my nerves had settled, and is a far better job.

Similar situation here. My gut instinct was that it wasn't right for me but there were more pros than cons so I decided to go for it.

I've been in the job a few months now and it could still go either way. I'm hoping, and doing everything I can to make sure, it works out 😀
