What would you do if you had a spare 30m² rectangular room in your (very) large house.

Complete blank canvas for you to make something special with. Go!

Do you mean it's 30 square metres, which could be a room 10mtrs x 3mtrs, or do you mean it is 30 x 30 mtrs, so in old money that's around 120 feet x 120 feet.

That isn't a room, it's a footie pitch Grin

NorthEndGal · 29/05/2019 12:07

It isn't as big, but it is a spare room, I turned it into a studio/workshop.
I make seaglass art , and sell from home.
It gives me enough space to use my power tools, have multiple projects on the go, and I can close the door and walk away without worrying about someone (or the cats) getting into stuff.

One corner would have a comfy chair, bookcases, table and lamp for reading and the rest would be sewing/craft room

Shadycorner · 29/05/2019 12:11

If it had good light, sewing room at one end and art studio at other. Mixed creative "island" in the middle!

If light poor and couldn't be improved upon: cinema!

Shadycorner · 29/05/2019 12:11

Games room? Table tennis table?

JinglingHellsBells · 29/05/2019 12:12

If you mean 30 sq mtrs, that is not large. Many lounges are that size. Mine is around 6 x 4 metres= 24 sq metres.

I don't understand your post.

Most homes have rooms for a purpose- a study, a dining room, a kitchen, bedroom etc.

JellySlice · 29/05/2019 12:16

Two walls would be my library, with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a sliding ladder, comfy armchair, low table, hot watertap and supply of teas.

The other corner and two walls, the one with a good window, would be my sewing room, with sewing machine, overlocker, cutting table, ironing board, tailor's dummy, fabric and tool storage, and also yarn storage because I'd have a knitting machine there, too.

The floor would be carpeted. There would be good, inset ceiling lights, with appropriate additional lights in each zone so that the room could be as bright or as cosy as I chose. There would be voiles and a thick curtain on the window, again for brightness/cosiness.

There would be a resident cat who would instinctively know to make herself comfortable in the library corner, but not have any desire to enter the sewing corner.

I haven't thought about this much, oh no Smile

MrsWidgerysLodger · 29/05/2019 12:20

Sewing room/library space for me. I have fast to many books and I currently have my sewing set up (machine plus overlocker plus faaaaar too much fabric) in a corner of the dining room.

ElenadeClermont · 29/05/2019 12:22

Me too MrsWidgerysLodger

I'd have a huge sewing/crafting room. It would have a big cutting table which is much needed in my current house.
It would have a big window with loads of light. I was thinking about putting a desk in for WFH but actually I wouldn't want both in the same space.

If it really was "spare" - ie already got a proper office, second bath/shower-room/loo "library" area for all my books, magazines, DVDs etc then:

Large walk-in wardrobe with areas for the different seasonal clothes, winter coats, hats & woollens, boots, jewellery (sadly mostly costume), skincare, cosmetics, casual vs more formal wear etc

barryfromclareisfit · 01/06/2019 13:09

Work room. Search ‘sewing rooms’ on fb.

ifigoup · 01/06/2019 13:12

We haven’t got a spare room, so it would become a triple-purpose spare room / home office / sewing room.

Echomama · 02/06/2019 20:29

Sorry I'm terrible at numbers,
the house already has a music room(with sound system - used to be a games room with a bar but we don't play pool etc.), a piano room ,child play room, dining room, living room, kitchen plus spare rooms upstairs for library
this spare room is more like a football pitch.... it's probably the right length but maybe not as wide
@jellyslice - made me laugh ,much to add to our library I think!
So many sewers! what do you all sew that needs it out all the time?
I must get more into sewing!

It's not that our sewing needs to be out all the time, it's that being able to spread out and have everything in one place is very comfortable. Right now I have to cut my fabric in the kitchen, go through a room to get to my sewing machine in a second room, return to the kitchen to iron the seams, and back and forth. Takes the fun out of it.

Of course, in my well laid-out sewing room I'd have storage with doors so that everything could be hidden, and my huge cutting table would turn into a huge dining table for dinner parties.
