And were you disappointed/outraged/etc?

Watching Pretty in Pink with prom aged dd.

Wow, Andie was a bit of a bitch (and not as likeable as i remember!), film SO much more risqué than I recall, John Cryer SO camp! Annie Potts still amazing! Well done to John Hughes for addressing white poverty. Will absolutely fucking NOT be watch The Breakfast Club of 16 Candles with her though! 😲

Both DD's love Stand by Me, The Goonies, Teen Witch & Adventures in Babysitting... DD2 shares my love for musicals & can often be found watching Calamity Jane, Meet Me in St Louis & South Pacific.

DS thinks all my movies are pants but he has recently discovered Red Dwarf & finds it hilarious to call his sisters smegheads they don't find it funny at all Grin

Osquito · 25/05/2019 21:58

DS (just gone 5) LOOOOVES the old ghostbusters films and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Often hear him in the shower singing all of Jack’s Lament and last Halloween he was in fact the Pumpkin King Smile

Graphista · 25/05/2019 22:31

Adventures in babysitting - dd adored - it was on vhs when I first played it for her and she literally wore the tape out!

Goonies - also a hit

Gremlins - one of her absolute favourites! She was WAY too young and should have been scared she loved it and was absolutely in stitches at the dark humour!

Dirty dancing - she's not a fan

Grease - she liked then went off

Ferris bueller's day off - loved

Breakfast club - at first not a fan but I think she was too young to appreciate she tried it again thanks to pitch perfect and loved it

Big - loved

Back to the future - loved first one not keen on sequels op not only incest but attempted rape, underage drinking and drugs! Yet we think of it as a "family" film 😂😂

Top gun - loved but hated that I "made her cry" (I'd forgotten how upsetting goose's death was)

Cocktail - loved

Star Wars - sadly she just doesn't get it at all and cannot understand my excitement at the reboots etc

Scream franchise (she was old enough for these) - but we disagree on the best ones I prefer the original trilogy she likes scream 4 best

A debate over "fault in our stars" led me to introducing her to REALLY good weepies/melodramas which she loved but also was weirdly "why didn't you tell me how sad it was?!" (Because I HAD told her they'd have her in bits! Imitation of life really shocked her as she didn't know such socially conscious films were made "that long ago" - that led her to an interesting and educational discussion with my mum (who's a boomer and was an active feminist and civil rights campaigner in her day) who introduced her to many more of that era with a clear political bent.

Pipandmum - Jennifer beals at 55 is still absolutely bloody stunning! Fab actress too.

Jumanji - she loved. Also Mrs doubtfire (which is slated by many on here) and Jack. She made the mistake recently as it was on tv of watching good will hunting mainly because of Robin Williams being in it and then told me off for not warning her how heartbreaking THAT was - I didn't even know she was watching it!! We were both so shocked and saddened when he died. When she was telling me off for good will hunting I pointed out to her I haven't been able to watch anything but jumanji since!

AndTheEnd · 25/05/2019 22:34

Annie.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/05/2019 22:42

The rape of Lorraine is a fab theory and probably quite true. Current day Lorraine is an alcoholic who says the only good thing on the night of the dance was the kids with George. When Marty let's George stand up to Biff when he is pushing Lorraine - future Lorraine changes.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/05/2019 22:42

Fan theory not fab

Fatted · 25/05/2019 22:45

My boys love the star wars films. Although they really didn't appreciate THAT scene in Empire Strikes Back.

Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Indiana Jones and they love ET. I don't think they've ever seen the Goonies yet though.

The strangest one was the original cartoon Transformers movie from the 80s. I remember going to see it at the cinema when I was about the same age as DS1 is now and I could actually remember the entire film! Obviously made a big impression!!

isthatabloborwhat · 25/05/2019 22:50

The Jungle Book
Star Wars
Grease
Calamity Jane
And on tv - Dad's Army

Slightly more recent:
Raiders of the Lost Ark

More recent still:

2anddone · 25/05/2019 22:51

The look who's talking films
Ferris bueller
Big

All the Disney classics
We have movie night every Saturday, I like to choose a film from when I was younger when it's my turn

NOOGADAH40 · 25/05/2019 22:51

Tried to watch Dirty Dancing with my 13yr old..she walked out muttering 'this is rubbish' after 1/2hr!

Charley50 · 25/05/2019 23:05

Ooh I wonder if DS would like Airplane.

Sgtmajormummy · 25/05/2019 23:08

My 13yo DD is currently obsessed with Amadeus which I probably saw at 17.
The Muppet Christmas Carol and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were hits when they were younger.
Gremlins bombed, Watership Down left them cold and 8yo DS was traumatized by ET.

AtSea1979 · 25/05/2019 23:09

Trains, planes and automobiles
Ghostbusters
Gremlins
Back to the future
Flight of the navigator
Harry and the Henderson’s
Miracle of 34th street

Still loved them all!

AtSea1979 · 25/05/2019 23:10

The DGPs put Jaws on for DS (13) I could tell he was a bit freaked out when I picked him up!

Hadenoughofitall441 · 25/05/2019 23:53

SummersB · 26/05/2019 08:50

My kids loved all the classics - Back to the Future, Labyrinth, Dirty Dancing, Gerase, Return To Oz, etc.
DH recently watched The Crow with 18yo DD which was also a hit.

stoplickingthetelly · 26/05/2019 10:14

Cool runnings - my 6 year old loves it, and the early Harry Potters.

mizu · 26/05/2019 10:52

Just about old enough now to watch Stand By Me, my absolute fav. And not far from us The Lost Boys will be shown alfresco in September so tempted to take DD1 to that.

They have watched Back to the Futures - loved
The Princess Bride - loved
Goonies - loved
Indiana Jones, OK they didn't feel my Harrison love but they liked the films Grin
Labyrinth - they thought it was a pile of shite GrinGrin

mizu · 26/05/2019 10:54

And of course Star Wars. They like and will watch with me but I've had to drag them to the cinema to watch the latest ones, which they've liked too.

KittensinaBlender · 26/05/2019 13:20

Oh I must show them Ferris Bueller - I think they will love it.

Wish I could stream Adventures in Babysitting as I’m sure they’d enjoy that too.

Singleandproud · 26/05/2019 13:26

Dd loved the TRUMAN show and BIG when she was 9ish.
Matilda was her favourite film for ages.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/05/2019 13:39

Over the years, we have watched the following films with great success (DS is now 16):

Both Bill and Ted films
Ferris Bueller
Brassed Off
The Full Monty
Billy Elliot
Legally Blonde
Shakespeare in Love
Gladiator
Home Alone
Die Hard and the sequels

And also Buffy and Angel.

He's seen stuff like Back to the Future, Grease and Top Gun but wasn't blown away by them - he really enjoyed the others. We've also done Indiana Jones and ALL the Bond over the years with all of us cringing at the sexism (DS is a pretty robust at calling out sexism and misogyny when he sees it). Obviously we've done all the Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, etc when he was much younger but he can take them or leave them.

boredboredboredboredbored · 26/05/2019 18:26

Ferris Buellers day off

Stand by me

Grease

Bronx tale

Teenagers loved them
