What films gave you 'shared' with your kids from your childhood/teenage years?

And were you disappointed/outraged/etc?

Watching Pretty in Pink with prom aged dd.

Wow, Andie was a bit of a bitch (and not as likeable as i remember!), film SO much more risqué than I recall, John Cryer SO camp! Annie Potts still amazing! Well done to John Hughes for addressing white poverty. Will absolutely fucking NOT be watch The Breakfast Club of 16 Candles with her though! 😲

What’s eating Gilbert grape when dd told me she liked leonardo dicaprio. I ended up balling my eyes out.

Taswama · 25/05/2019 20:38

Mary Poppins, jungle book
Willy Fog - found in a charity shop
Flintstones
Back to the Future- plot was more dodgy than I remembered!

celtiethree · 25/05/2019 20:39

Maybe a bit older than my teenage years but shared with my teenagers:

Grosse Pointe Blank
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Good Will Hunting

C0untDucku1a · 25/05/2019 20:42

Back to the Future 3. The other two not age appropriate with all the raping of Lorraine.

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2019 20:47

My two liked Wayne's World. Grin

Quellium · 25/05/2019 20:50

It's "the chicks will scream" now in the live version Grin.

Big is just a really uncomfortable watch for me now. It is just sooo inappropriate!

whatthewhatthewhat · 25/05/2019 20:51

@C0untDucku1a WTF?

My 7 and almost-5 year old DSs have been brainwashed brought up to be as obsessed with all three Back to the Futures as their dad is. They love them.

I loved the old Charlotte’s Web cartoon with Debbie Reynolds voicing Charlotte as a kid as did they.

I’m an old musicals tragic so they also love Singing in the Rain (they’ll both hang off any lamp posts they pass and pretend to be Gene Kelly which makes me awfully happy), The King and I and they adore the fabulous 1970s Jesus Christ Superstar almost as much as I do. They were surprisingly non-plussed by Annie and never wanted it again after one viewing.

I had been toying whether to try them with Grease. I fully remember how smutty it is but since people are saying it went completely over their heads until a certain age...

ElphabaTheGreen · 25/05/2019 20:53

Oh yes, Mary Poppins of course.

DS2 had me cackling over my steering wheel when, at the age of two, he cried out from the back seat, ‘Take heart, for Mrs Pankhurst has been clapped in irons again!’

Widdendream77 · 25/05/2019 20:54

Flight of the navigator- my first film we saw at the cinema. Got to show my 5yr old dd a few weeks back and she liked it but me and Dh loved it!

Chuffingchuff · 25/05/2019 20:56

Fly Away Home, my 6 year old DS loves it.

C0untDucku1a · 25/05/2019 21:00

@whattheehatthewhat ??? What do you mean?

SallyWD · 25/05/2019 21:01

Just this week I got my daughter 2 films I loved as a kid - Never ending Story and Labyrinth. She liked the both. Never ending story wasn't quite as I remembered it! Labyrinth was excellent. A true classic.

Pipandmum · 25/05/2019 21:02

My 15 year old son and I just watched Back to the Future. Brilliant and still entertaining though I’ve seen it many times. My 14 year old daughter and I did a marathon Flashdance, Footloose and Fame. Fashion was very suspect and my daughter asked why everyone’s hair was so big and curly.

TSSDNCOP · 25/05/2019 21:07

Not a film but DS and I just watched seven series of The West Wing

Charley50 · 25/05/2019 21:09

Back to the Future - still great .
ET - still fabulous

CielBleuEtNuages · 25/05/2019 21:18

My DSes are 5 and 7.

ET was popular. As was the Flintstones (I found it rubbish)

DS1 went through a huge star wars phase a couple of years ago, starting with the older ones.

Jumanji was very popular. As was Home alone 1 and 2.

The Lion King was liked but no other old disney has worked. And unfortunately neither like mary Poppins whereas i adored it.

anothermansmother · 25/05/2019 21:21

Kevin and Perry go large- watched with ds recently he thought it was hilarious, but hadn't realised how sexual it is.
Others are mrs doubtfire and the goodies. There were definitely less boundaries in the 80s.

littlebillie · 25/05/2019 21:27

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

They were delighted

MashedSpud · 25/05/2019 21:32

Grease, Charlie and the chocolate factory (Gene Wilder one) and Home Alone.

Shouldershrugger · 25/05/2019 21:36

This will show my age.. who cares.. i loved the movie..... "dont tell mum the babysitter's dead"

Wellhellojonsnow · 25/05/2019 21:40

I’ve recently shown my two (6&4) The Waterbabies & Gummy Bears (that’s not a film though). They love them both and now sing the songs with me 😁

JosephineHass · 25/05/2019 21:44

Oh god, my kids are still quite small, so I shared with them only some.
I loved Beethoven and do too.
As a little child I used to love My little pony ( now the retro one) and Care Bears, Alice in Wonderland the old one- my dd loves them too.
As I said they are still small for some movies.
But I can't wait to share with them in the future Jumanji, Gremlins, The Neverending story- can you tell I was 90's child?😂

Allthebees · 25/05/2019 21:45

Teenwolf was a treat a couple of weeks ago! The DC loved it!

cheeseismydownfall · 25/05/2019 21:48

I can't believe no one has said the original Ghostbusters! Pretty much the only movie we all love!
