Spotty tongue, help!!

Wee one was eating dinner tonight as normal.
Usually loves coleslaw, he took a mouthful started screaming and spat it out.
After a drink I noticed that he's got little yellow spots all over his tongue. It's obviously bothering him but he's managed to drink his milk although not too keen on eating (managed a bit chocolate tho Hmm).
No other symptoms, well in himself if a bit clingy but he's only just getting over a few weeks of minor ailments.
No new food or exposure to anything else odd I can recall.
Any ideas? Anyone seen anything like this? Was instantly thinking hfm but I don't think it fits? Help!

Could be hand, foot and mouth?
Don't worry, not as scary as it sounds.
Look it up on NHS website

Just re read your post. Why don't you think it is hfm?

Oral thrush? Has he been ill or had antibiotics recently?

I looked at NHS website and he's no blisters anywhere else or a temperature?
I also have no real life experience of it so feel a bit clueless. None of the online images I saw look like that, the tongues are all properly blistered.
Entirely possible to be hfm, just asking opinions.

He finished a course of penicillin a week ago for strep throat.
