What the fuck is this (insect ID please)

Looks like some kind of wasp hybrid...it's about 1 inch long I reckon. Anyone know what it is? It flew at my face...god I'm traumatised. It's been liberated into the back garden now.

Is it a paper wasp? I saw some a few weeks ago and was unimpressed!

It looks like a cross between a dirt dauber and a paper wasp...according to my google image search
