It's the Glorious 25th May: Truth! Freedom! Justice! Reasonably priced love! And a hard-boiled egg.

Clicked on this thread because .... well, no idea really! But you have reminded me that I have always meant to read Discworld. So thank you to justasking111 for answering the question I was about to ask about where to start!
Now ordering the kindle edition.
(in my defence, I did get the towel reference)

JellySlice · 25/05/2019 13:20

Thank goodness DIscworld been ignored by the film industry! They're bound to get the characters wrong. I even have to skim past the ads for character figurines at the backs of the books because they've got Death wrong, wrong, WRONG.

(Am in two minds about watching the Good Omens adaptation.)

SisterMaryLoquacious · 25/05/2019 13:27

I don’t think many people would recommend starting with The Colour of Magic actually (although I personally love it).

I think the majority opinion is to start with either Wyrd Sisters: the first of the Witches sub-series, or Guards, Guards: the first of the Ankh-Morpork/Nights Watch sub-series.

WitchDancer · 25/05/2019 13:30

My first was The Hogfather. It was also my son's first 😁

justasking111 · 25/05/2019 13:31

@JellySlice well I am not a purist and know the Harry Potter books had to be adapted to fit into a time schedule. Find me a book that was adapted to the last comma, full stop. David Jason was a wonderful Rincewind, Ian Richardson a brilliant death. Even Lord of the Rings had to adapt cut stuff out.

I think purist thinking is plain wrong, if people see the film version they read the books. Sometimes it is the way to get folks reading.

I read every day but not everyone does, these adaptations may make a difference.

justasking111 · 25/05/2019 13:33

The colour of magic is Terrys first book in this genre, also the first discworld novel. Which is why I suggested it.

You can see everything TP wrote in this link.

PTerry RIP.

ElloBrian · 25/05/2019 13:42

Greetings to all!🥚 my lilac has gone over already 😢 but here’s to TP 🍢 ratonnastick anyone?

Bartelby · 25/05/2019 15:45

My lilac still hanging in there. There was a real battle of cable street. I’m slightly ashamed I only found that out recently.

Binglebong · 25/05/2019 16:33

My pratchett's are all packed at the moment but you've inspired me to grab a copy of 5th elephant from a charity shop. I had been avoiding doing do as I don't want to deprive someone -but I'm being deprived! it will get redonated when I have my original back available.

I agree - start with Wyrd Sisters or Guards Guards. The earlier ones he is still getting a feel for his wonderful world and to my mind they aren't as good. The wizards are incredibly popular though.

And for the young'uns try Carpet People. Much overlooked and charming.

JellySlice · 25/05/2019 16:37

The LOTR films were dire. I only watched the first, and it was 2h of my life that I will never get back. Yeah, I know, I'm in a minority with that. But then the friend I watched it with, who likes action and fantasy films, but had never read LOTR, also thought it was dire.

I accept that what's in my head is not necessarily in the director's head. I don't care enough about HP to be all that bothered where the director made it different (though I had always assumed that Hermione was mixed-race).

I've never seen the adaptation you mention. I can totally see David Jason as Rincewind, though.

JellySlice · 25/05/2019 16:39

I think Death is TP: quietly very confident in doing what he is good at, but a bit uncertain if he steps out of his role.

PerspicaciaTick · 25/05/2019 17:36

David Jason was a wonderful Rincewind
Really?
As Rincewind is a young man not too many years out of UU, whose talent is running away very, very fast, I thought it was about as dire a piece of casting as I can imagine.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2019 17:41

I started DD on the Bromeliad Trilogy. This was at about the time TP made his diagnosis public, and quite a lot of MNers chose names inspired by him as a tribute. So I was GrimmaTheNome for quite a while - until the rise in popularity of dragons on MN coupled with a desire for a discworld name made my choice inevitable.

Coalscuttle? What coalscuttle?

JellySlice · 25/05/2019 17:46

Depends which book, Perspicacia, and when it was filmed.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 25/05/2019 17:46

Lilac socks 😊

I met him at the last Hogswatch he attended in Wincanton, think it was one of the last appearances he made, was sad. Bugger the embuggerance. He was still amazing though.

Did anyone ever go to Wadfest?

ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2019 18:07

I have a lilac t-shirt on (I didn't think I could carry off wearing a towel, lilac or not, in public).Grin

SacharissaCrisplock · 25/05/2019 19:07

I never managed Wadfest or went to the Wincanton gatherings but I went to every uk convention from 2002. It's been nice to see the babes in arms in 2002 become amazing adults over the years.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 25/05/2019 20:40

I have smiled at the lilac (going over) down our street every time I have passed it today
