It's the Glorious 25th May: Truth! Freedom! Justice! Reasonably priced love! And a hard-boiled egg.

JellySlice GenuineKlatchianPottery I met him when he spoke in Ely Cathedral 7-8 years ago when he was quite badly affected. Certain ticket numbers were drawn to have a photo taken with him and receive a pre-signed book plate (as he was past being able to sign them on demand), and I was one of the lucky ones. I found the whole experience very sad to be honest. He was friendly and smiled for a photo with each of us but he was clearly tired and not comfortable, I mainly felt guilty for keeping him from the tea and biscuits he'd just been brought. I wish I had met him before the dementia. Horrible horrible illness.

(And yes, I know I can't spell, but by the time I realised it I couldn't remember my mumsnet password to correct it. It's been wrong a couple of years...)

Moved house last year and we have a lilac bush! Eggs on to boil and husband poised to make sure we get the best bits after the barricades are dismantled.

GlomOfNit · 25/05/2019 00:09

My (white) lilac went over weeks ago! Sad Did Pterry's lilacs bloom later down in Wiltshire or do they bloom late in the stygian murk of Ankh-Morpork?

I need a lilac badge instead. Saw someone wearing one the other day.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2019 00:29

I saw a dwarf lilac in full bloom yesterday.

I hadn't realised may 25th is also towel day. I do have a lilac towel...

LunchInASunblestBag · 25/05/2019 00:59

FOR YOU, THE CAKE IS OVER. YOU HAVE REACHED THE END OF CAKE.

DuchessSybilVimes · 25/05/2019 07:45

@HavelockVetinari I wish I could be more Sybilesque in real life. I would like to sweep!

Side note - it took me more books than I care to admit before I realised Vetinari was a play on Medici. Blush

99point9FahrenheitDegrees · 25/05/2019 08:19

My husband calls it Day of the Terrycloth. In a loving way. Grabbing my Don't Panic towel and nipping down to pick some lilac...

Smitetheewiththunderbolts · 25/05/2019 08:36

I never really understood the lilac and rising up thing. Was it referencing something from Earthworld history?

mbosnz · 25/05/2019 08:56

Our Sir Terry story is that DH was in a bookstore in Christchurch (NZ), and leafing through the new book. Sir Terry was in Christchurch for a book signing event, and there was a poster above the bookshelf, advertising it, with Sir Terry in his trademark black hat, polo neck and coat. He just happened to look at the gentleman next to him - and it was the Great Man himself!

Reading how shy he was, I'm very glad DH didn't approach him. I'll let DH know, he's always slightly kicked himself for not doing so!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 25/05/2019 08:56

I have managed to get all the guard books second hand for a tenth of the price, the parcel came on Wednesday. I handed it over to DS (I've got my own copies) and have not heard from him since.

I have managed to find a lilac scarf large and think enough to serve towel purposes. But I don't like eggs (unless hidden in a cake).

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/05/2019 09:04

@Smitetheewiththunderbolts , I always assumed it was the Discworld's equivalent of wearing a poppy for Rememberance Day?

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 25/05/2019 09:47

It was 2000 when I met him, and I found him to be absolutely charming, very shy and slightly bewildered that so many people had turned up for the whole weekend (it was Thursday to Monday, and one of the May bank holidays). He was fascinated by my digital camera and actually took it off me to look at, then handed it to Steven Briggs to take a picture of us together. That picture had pride of place for many years, sadly it was destroyed in a flood and we hadn’t backed up our computer before loosing everything to a virusSad.
That weekend is one of my outstanding and favourite memories.

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 25/05/2019 09:49

*Losing. Damn auto correct

HavelockVetinari · 25/05/2019 09:59

How do they rise up.

See you all at Small Gods!

Legitimate?
Can’t blame a mother for being proud Nobby Grin

Binglebong · 25/05/2019 10:12

Side note - it took me more books than I care to admit before I realised Vetinari was a play on Medici.

Thank you for pointing that out. I'd missed it completely! Blush

To the people asking; The Lilac comes from the Guatds book Night Watch. But it really is one you need to read to understand. Sorry.

CherryCheezcake · 25/05/2019 10:21

I'm wearing my lilac brooch that I bought on eBay a few years ago (penny to show size)

Who's wearing the lilac tomorrow?
JasperRising · 25/05/2019 10:26

My absolute favourite Discworld book (closely followed by Jingo). So poignant and so cleverly done in that you can see the inspiration in our own history so it resonates with us whilst being very much of Discworld (if that makes sense...) Sadly no lilac flowers in my garden or lilac clothing.

slipperywhensparticus · 25/05/2019 10:29

I was reading unseen academicals and thinking to myself why hasn't he written another book about nutt then I remembered

My lilac tree has fallen over but it's still flowered when it's gone I'm buying another a proper lilac lilac tree (this one is white)

HelenaJustina · 25/05/2019 10:35

I change my Fb photo to a picture of lilac this month. In memory both of Sir TP and my gorgeous Granny who died from complications due to Alzheimer’s.

Those books are so re-readable. Have started my DDs on Tiffany and they have loved the short stories.

Lima45 · 25/05/2019 10:44

Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love... And a Hard Boiled egg.
(Even though I don't eat eggs)

Need to reread all my discworld books again. I'm picking them up on Kindle, every month there seems to be a different one for 99p in the monthly deals

MrSlant · 25/05/2019 10:55

I know what I'm doing all day today now. Comfy chair, snacks, a whippet and pile of books. Happy days.

My greatest joy at the moment is seeing DS3 fall in love with the Discworld books. People who don't understand will call them science fiction or dismiss them for being silly but I have never read an author who understood human nature better. I'm hoping my boy will be taught how to think critically. And to never call an orang-utan a monkey.

Spudlet · 25/05/2019 11:09

When my brother was young - maybe 10? Actually probably more like early teens - he went blind, temporarily, as a result of incredibly fast-growing cataracts in both eyes, caused by an underlying condition. He couldn't have surgery until the cause of the problem was sorted so he was blind for quite a long time. We used to read to him out loud until our voices went - Lord of the Rings, and of course, Pratchett. The one I remember best is The Hogfather - still regularly quoted in our family. I used to hurt my throat trying to be Death, but apparently my Susan was on point.

'No sugar piggy-wiggy for you Albert' is often heard during grumpy moments!

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 25/05/2019 12:00

My DDs (27 and 22 now) grew up watching Weird Sisters and Soul Music Grin they loved Maurice and the Tiffany series and The Hogfather is our Christmas Eve tradition. My youngest has all the books on Audible, and is listening to Soul Music as I type.
We are having major repairs and decorating at the moment, so all my Discworld ornaments are safely stored away, I have about 25 of themBlush. Once we’ve decorated I shall be buying them a cabinet and hanging my maps.

justasking111 · 25/05/2019 12:44

It baffles me that Harry Potter was supported by the film industry yet, Discworld ignored apart from 3 Sky adaptations which I did enjoy.
