What do you watch when you need a bloody good cry?

For me it's Mamma Mia Here We Go Again. Cheesy, huh? But oh so cathartic. Abba comes on, the cat and the kids scarper, grab a wine, and off we go. . .

Charles11 there are many things that have happened recently in my life that have been deeply upsetting and painful, but I find I am unable to cry at the most traumatic things, meaning I am unable to benefit from that release of emotion, that we all need, in one way or another. Films and TV programmes allow me to do do this. It probably sounds weird - why can't I cry when one of my close friends died? When my friend was almost murdered? When my aunty was diagnosed with terminal cancer? When my friend's son committed suicide? When my marriage ended? I don't know. It's like these things hurt too much and the pain is too deep. Crying at a sad film somehow allows me to release some of this.

My Girl - breaks my heart every single time. Though I often forget how sad it gets and pop it on when I'm in a happy mood and want something light. This just means the ending hits me harder than normal.

Also The Queen of Sheba episode of The Royale Family. Not allowed to watch it anymore because of how much it makes me cry.

And a more recent addition - Mamma Mia 2! The church scene at the end completely tears me apart to proper ugly crying. Possibly because my Grandmother had just died before the film came out and watching the film with my DM was really tough. Watched it on my own a couple weeks ago and broke down again.

The end of Last Of The Mohicans when Uncas tries to save the little sister made me ugly cry

Cagliostro · 24/05/2019 20:53

Various episodes of Scrubs. How one show can be so funny and so emotional is beyond me.

(I sobbed at TBBT too last night)

Cagliostro · 24/05/2019 20:54

The last episode of Atypical made me cry too

Beamazing · 24/05/2019 21:15

Moonlight. Chiron (all 3 of them) broke my heart 😭

Charles11 · 24/05/2019 21:50

Thanks everyone for explaining about the want to cry. The only times I can remember crying was when I was grieving and when I was so angry and frustrated with dh.
I hated being in those emotional states so wouldn’t willingly put myself in that position.
I don’t like feeling sad either so avoid watching sad films and only read the news, never watch it.

Polestar50 · 24/05/2019 21:51

Lion
Based on the true story of a young boy in India who gets lost and eventually adopted in Australia. The film is his experiences alone and then his efforts.as a young adult, to find his village again. The most emotional, tear jerking, non-cheesy, wonderful, wonderful film.

ConstanzaAndSalieri · 25/05/2019 03:03

There are lots of things I wouldn’t watch now because I’d cry too much now I have children, I think. I mean it’s been 20 years since I watched Schindlers List but I don’t think I could again.

But I have always loved Shadowlands for this.

Alicewond · 25/05/2019 03:05

Greys anatomy, certain episodes 😢

AfterSchoolWorry · 25/05/2019 03:10

Charles11 I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I don't cry, I'm not familiar with the feeling of 'needing to cry'.
