What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

Empire state building. Massive queue, badly managed and rude staff. Top of the rock was far superior.

Venice. I wanted to love it but once I'd seen a gondola and walked over a bridge I'd had enough.

Place I thought I wouldn't be bothered about but I fell in love with - Majorca. We hired a car and did a little road trip. Away the touristy areas it's beautiful.

Pamukkale in Turkey

I was there in the 80's too, travelling around Turkey. It wasn't busy when we were there. Must dig out the photo's. I remember going to a hotel nearby, swimming in a pool that looked as if had old stone columns in it.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 24/05/2019 21:14

Lego Land. Honestly can't believe that place still goes on.

RunningNinja79 · 24/05/2019 21:16

New York. I thought I was the only one, apparently not. Very over-rated. Everyone else seems to love it

Agree with Venice, it wasn't my first thought, but ever since I went in my teens I vowed never to go back for more than a day.

Love the pps complaining that the Little Mermaid is, er, little Grin

poorbuthappy · 24/05/2019 21:22

Portmerion North Wales.
Fur coat no knickers. 😆😆

Holymolymackerel · 24/05/2019 21:23

All of Rome. Colosseum, sistine chapel etc. Thought it would be marvellous.

Giggorata · 24/05/2019 21:26

Niagara again, the town, not the Falls. Tacky as anything.
Same with Tintagel. Awful disappointment.

CarolDanvers · 24/05/2019 21:27

Not disappointed so much as surprised by how small the Statue of Liberty was.

Warwick Castle was painful. Really expensive and not much once you got in. Might be better now but was really rubbish about ten years ago.

Salt Beef Sandwiches and pickles in Carnegie deli in NYC. Not particularly tasty tbh and despite the huge portions none of us really wanted to eat too much of it. It's closed now which is a shame as it was iconic, but the food was meh.

Kuala Lumpur. I was so excited about going, but it really didn't offer me anything amazing. Loved the islands though that we went to on the same trip.

isabellerossignol · 24/05/2019 21:34

I'm a simple soul really. I've enjoyed everywhere I've visited. As long as it's a change of scene from the day to day reality of life, I can find something enjoyable about it.

Stravapalava · 24/05/2019 21:35

Other cities I've been disappointed by:

Paris - horribly unfriendly
Copenhagen - boring
Madrid
Milan

isabellerossignol · 24/05/2019 21:35

Although I do accept that that would not apply if I found myself in the middle of a warzone or something. But anywhere that is safe enough, I can pass the time ok.

mynameisMrG · 24/05/2019 21:36

Milford sound in New Zealand. Everyone had gone on and on about how breathtaking it was and I had to go. Was completely underwhelmed.

And Milan. Dirty and covered in graffiti. Really disappointing.

applesarerroundandshiny · 24/05/2019 21:37

I love Rome and Venice!

Have been underwhelmed by Florence and Milan though. And, yeah, Pisa, there's not much there is there?

Chickydoo · 24/05/2019 21:39

I adore so many of these places..anything with a bit of history (or geography) gets my vote

Beamur · 24/05/2019 21:41

Skye. Had wanted to go for ages, massively disappointing. Full of tourists and camper vans blocking all the narrow roads. The bridge to the mainland has ruined it.
Other islands like Mull and Arran still rather special and lovely.

RusholmeRuffian · 24/05/2019 21:41

Another vote for Niagara and Paris. I'm adding Gatlinburg. I imagined a beautiful ski resort with nice places to eat and drink. I'm got Blackpool with mountains.

haverhill · 24/05/2019 21:42

Florence. Absolutely heaving, jam packed.

Tweedypie · 24/05/2019 21:43

The entire city of Vienna with the exception of the pretty horses, not when performing though.

YouBumder · 24/05/2019 21:45

Oh I love Lake Bled. Lake Bohinj more stunning though.

For me, Venice. It was Ok but scruffy plus the canals and bridges get annoying.

applesarerroundandshiny · 24/05/2019 21:46

Also underwhelmed by Barcelona but I think that was in part due to our bad planning on not seeing the full sights of the city. Couldn't see the fuss of Las Ramblas, and the positioning of La Sagrada Familia.

tumpymummy · 24/05/2019 21:46

Wow! Am surprised by lot of these. Machu Pichu I thought was amazing, such a spectacular setting. I also really liked Rome Inc the colliseum and Sistine chapel.

coffeeagogo · 24/05/2019 21:46

Waikiki beach it was just shit - tourists everywhere loads of traffic and a concrete jungle - was like Dubai with a beach

Iambuffy · 24/05/2019 21:50

Stonehenge...I am the least woo person ever but...shudder. It was a bright sunny day with lots of other people around and I just couldn't wait to leave. It felt malevolent to me.

Giants causeway...just lots of stones and not like it looks on the TV.
