What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

Venice. Smelly. Too many people.

Disney World. Been four times. Each time, I pray for a migraine, so I might stay at the hotel. I do love Blizzard Beach and might ask to be dropped off their everyday whilst everyone else does the magic kingdom

Rome. Very very hot. Got pick pocketed.

QOD · 24/05/2019 21:55

Las Vegas. Hated it
Love love love NYC and Rome and Vatican and Berlin was absolutely heartbreakingly amazing

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 24/05/2019 21:55

Sunrise over the grand canyon. I remember thinking I'm bloody knackered and wish I could go back to bed!

Dragonlight · 24/05/2019 21:57

Paris.

MsTSwift · 24/05/2019 22:02

Eurodisney. Crap. Kids spent half the time playing in a park smaller and not nearly as good as our local park. How can you be disappointed with Paris?! Where did you stay?

Accountant222 · 24/05/2019 22:03

New York, dirty, hot, rude Americans, it was 1988, it was rough. Went to the public loo's at the port authority and a woman was tightening a band on her arm to inject drugs. Never been back.

Heratnumber7 · 24/05/2019 22:05

Westward Ho!

You'd think a town with a ! In its name would be a nice town. Perhaps even an exciting town. But it's not. It's pretty dreadful actually.

Punxsutawney · 24/05/2019 22:07

Waikiki Beach. We were only in that part of Hawaii for one day and we are not beach people but it just seemed to be a very small crowded beach. We did a quick visit, couple of photos and then off to explore elsewhere.

Onynx · 24/05/2019 22:08

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Mona Lisa & also the whole Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. That guy had waaaaay too much time on his hands and I never realised how tiny Sunflowers actually is. Also Laguna beach in California- great if you are a surfer - not quite so safe or fun if you think you can have a paddle with a baby & toddler. Currents were so strong!

crummyusername · 24/05/2019 22:08

Disagree on Stonehenge - it has a great visitor centre, it's an iconic site, the image is so familiar I loved seeing it in reality.

But I second a PP who said the Eden Project. It pains me to say it but it is soooo overcrowded and overcommercial. The car parks seem to stretch on for miles and there are queues and crowds all the way round. Feels like somewhere that started off as an amazing idea but then just became a victim of its own success.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 24/05/2019 22:10

I’ve been to almost all these places.

I would agree that Barcelona is meh, I feel mean though because I generally don’t like Spain so I came with some preconceived ideas.

I loved NY, Paris, Sam Francisco, Boston, Rome, Venice, Dubai, Sydney but LA was a disappointment, as for Turkey, it was the only country I ever wanted to leave as soon as I landed.

LoveTheLakes40 · 24/05/2019 22:11

Sydney Opera House is so much smaller than it looks in pics.

Australia was underwhelming overall, perfectly nice country but not worth the 24 hour flight.

goingtotown · 24/05/2019 22:12

London Zoo. £30 outrageous entrance fee. This place is outdated & shabby.

chemenger · 24/05/2019 22:12

Times Square in Summer is crowded and unbelievably sleazy. It’s just a grotty junction full of naked people, third rate street performers, people dressed in character costumes and other scammers all trying to separate tourists from their cash one way or another. The only reason to go there is the half price theatre ticket booth. See also Las Vegas.

PQ77 · 24/05/2019 22:15

Lakes District. Overcrowded and tiny (I’m from Nz and in my mind it would be like lake wanaka, tekapo, wakatiku etc...)

LoveTheLakes40 · 24/05/2019 22:18

Poland too, miserable and grey country.

Have enjoyed something about everywhere else I’ve visited. I’ve been around the world a few times. Ecuador is my fave but love NY, SAN Francisco, Thailand (although the beaches are more touristy now).

LoveTheLakes40 · 24/05/2019 22:20

@chemenger
Agree re Times Sq. Someone posted on FB recently that Manchester’s Exchange Sq is the Times Sq of the north - yep, loads of neon signs, full of drunks and sick and vomit, rubbish street performers and chain bars/restaurants.

Robinthecaveman · 24/05/2019 22:28

I feel so much better about not being able to afford a holiday after reading this thread.

crummyusername · 24/05/2019 22:36

Agree Pisa is shite. And much of Rome (got bag swiped which didn't help).

Love NY and Berlin but then I live in a big city so used to the noise etc.

Have been to Washington DC for work. Now that's pretty meh. Yes you can see the White House (from a distance) and there are museums but it's all so spread out, it doesn't have much atmosphere to it.

Whippet75 · 24/05/2019 22:39

Pompeii, was really looking forward to it but I was really disappointed.

drspouse · 24/05/2019 22:42

Oh I loved Pompeii! It was really quiet when I went which I think helped.

TheFaerieQueene · 24/05/2019 22:44

webuiltthis I think I love you.

I am also a bit star struck that I had the same response as AnyFucker in Copenhagen

TitchyP · 24/05/2019 22:50

Casablanca. Not sure what I was expecting but it was grim

user1471504234 · 24/05/2019 22:54

Santorini. Over-crowded, over-developed and expensive with volcanic dust everywhere and people driving quad bikes too fast on the roads.
Niagara Falls was also disappointing but nowhere near as much as Santorini!
