What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

Stonehenge, Mauritius, Capri, San Francisco

Sarcelle · 24/05/2019 19:32

Forgot, Hollywood. Don't bother!

TSSDNCOP · 24/05/2019 19:33

Name Boston, Bath, Seville and the Grand Canyon.

But it depends on what your expectation is doesn’t it. As I said we were so upset to see the litter in Bethlehem, but my friend finds it super-spiritual.

NYC is so much better if you know a local or you live there, and get inside the nitty gritty and away fro mid-town. It’s also that you’ve seen it so often you already “know” it.

Summersunshine2 · 24/05/2019 19:35

I loved Paris and Rome - surprised lots on here don't.
I didnt like Miami.
Also meh at Waikiki beach - although out at sea on a lilo a turtle popped its head out of the water so that more than made up for it Grin

FurrySlipperBoots · 24/05/2019 19:36

Cheddar Gorge. I didn't have huge expectations of it, and to be fair the gorge itself is pretty impressive, but it was totally tackily-touristized. And the lethal car drivers/motorbike riders zooming up and down the road there don't give a shit who they kill. It could have been so much nicer.

Del1lahdaydream · 24/05/2019 19:40

Taj Mahal
New York in general

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 24/05/2019 19:47

Agree with Venice, and moaned about the minuscule Mona Lisa.

On the other hand I loved Bruges but we went in November so perhaps not so busy?

Also loved Lake Bled & the Krka falls which are further south.

I'm nominating the Bahamas & the Acropolis for the hall of shame. Paestum in Italy is way better.

Freshprincess · 24/05/2019 19:49

Hadrians wall, probably because we walked for miles in the pissing rain with a hangover to get there and it’s just a low wall.

I wasn’t too impressed with Vegas either. It was freezing cold so there wasn’t much to do except casinos and shopping. The day trip to the Grand Canyon was great, though.

IntoValhalla · 24/05/2019 19:51

The pyramids Hmm
Was like a massive, dusty rubbish dump unfortunately. It had potential to be spectacular, but careless tourists and locals who simply couldn’t give a fuck about where they dump their rubbish makes it shit.
Standing there taking a picture with a crisp packet blowing around my head isn’t exactly what I had in mind.

NotMyPuppy · 24/05/2019 19:53

That shitty clock in Prague.

Ladymargarethall · 24/05/2019 19:58

Prague itself. But yes, the clock was an 'Is that it?' moment.

mychildrenarebarmy · 24/05/2019 20:02

The Mona Lisa. My husband finds it highly amusing that he asked me what I thought and the best I could come up with was “The frame is quite nice.”

HelloCanYouHearMe · 24/05/2019 20:07

Statue of Liberty - tiny
Paris - meh
Bruges - double meh

However... Budapest and Luxembourg City are both lovely and well worth a visit

herecomestherainagain2 · 24/05/2019 20:08

@JMAngel1 I came on here to say grand canyon for exactly the same reason!

Theghosttrain · 24/05/2019 20:09

Pisa is a hole, full of stalls selling tat. Children were begging at the restaurant tables in Lille, that was awful. Oh and I want keen on Brussels either.

Went to Santorini in the mid 80s, long before cruise ships went there, and the airport was a military one with an outdoor pen for passengers! It was incredible, hardly any tourists and we stayed in touch with several locals for years afterwards. From what people say now, it has changed beyond belief

Pipandmum · 24/05/2019 20:12

Norwegian fiords. Maybe we went at the wrong time (August) but it was just foggy and drizzly and not at all spectacular.
Blue mountains in Australia. Just couldn’t see what the fuss was.

JustSomebodie · 24/05/2019 20:14

Hollywood is a nasty dump
Osaka was boring.

Hellomumsne · 24/05/2019 20:16

New York. I wanted to go my whole life but when I got there, just meh. I loved Hollywood though! An amazing energy with lots of interesting people doing interesting things.

cptartapp · 24/05/2019 20:25

The little mermaid in Copenhagen. Beautiful city but shes tiny!

Ronsters · 24/05/2019 20:27

Stonehenge was smaller than I expected, it was initially disappointing but I still enjoyed visiting as I'm very interested in that sort of thing.

I went to an exhibition of Hieronymous Bosch paintings in the Netherlands. The paintings were incredible but the place was absolutely packed, despite the tickets being timed. It was frustrating and most of the paintings were just glimpsed between the thronging crowds heads.

MadisonAvenue · 24/05/2019 20:30

San Francisco. Everyone who I know who has been told me how wonderful it was and how much I’d love it but I was totally underwhelmed by it. I can’t pinpoint exactly what I didn’t like about the place, just that I didn’t like it and it didn’t help that a lot of the people we came across working in hotels and restaurants were rude.

As for Niagara Falls, we have family on the US side so have visited a number of times and the Falls as a tourist attraction on that side are very different, there’s lots of parkland giving it a much more natural setting. The Canadian side was tacky when we very first went 30+ years ago and has got worse.

missmouse101 · 24/05/2019 20:31

Venice. Boiling hot, everything overpriced and just for the tourists.

OVienna · 24/05/2019 20:31

Florence, Italy. Much prefer other cities. Found out too late though- lived there for five months on a JYA.

Gormless · 24/05/2019 20:35

Giants Causeway. Interesting but for approximately twenty seconds only.

TravellingSpoon · 24/05/2019 20:38

Paris. Everybody raves and raves about it. I thought it was meh!
