What fresh hell awaits us now? She was really emotional.

Angela Leadsom walking out was the last straw for TM. And she was right to walk out.
You can’t have a PM, who’s job it is to deliver brexit. offering the country another referendum. She’s lost the plot.

edsheeranpaidmoretaxthanccola · 24/05/2019 13:14

She was not handed a poisoned chalice, she chose to become leader.

Whosorrynow · 24/05/2019 13:15

She willingly took the poisoned chalice

Whosorrynow · 24/05/2019 13:17

That's biting off more than she could ....drink

Peregrina · 24/05/2019 13:17

Why can't you have another Referendum with the question, is this the deal you want?

noodlenosefraggle · 24/05/2019 13:23

I don't think Boris will go for a hard Brexit. All he cares about is being Prime Minister. He will say whatever he needs to to get elected and will do whatever he needs to to stay elected, whether that be hard brexit/ soft brexit/ no brexit. He couldn't care less. He will say whatever he feels he needs to say to stay in power, in his jokey buffoonery way so that no one is actually listening to what he is saying, yet they are still listening to him speak and voting for him, because he's so great and entertaining and funny.

Valanice1989 · 24/05/2019 13:30

Does anyone remember the last leadership contest in 2016, when Boris pulled out because Gove had betrayed him? There were rumours that it was all a sham - Boris knew that the job was a poisoned chalice and was using Gove's "betrayal" as an excuse. If that was true, why would he want the job now? I can't see any way of making Brexit work.

brilliotic · 24/05/2019 13:37

Peregrina, that's what I thought everytime I heard TM say 'Let's deliver the Brexit the people voted for' (she said that a lot).

Which Brexit did the people vote for? How does she know?

That's exactly the problem isn't it... Some leave voters voted leave for reason A (e.g. sovereignity, but wanting to retain all economic ties), others voted leave for reason B (e.g. immigration), etc. Nobody voted for any specific kind of Brexit, as that was not the question put to us.

Just like no way forwards seems to find a majority in parliament, there probably wouldn't be a majority in a people's vote for any specific Brexit either.
So what is this 'Brexit the people voted for'??? It doesn't exist. The only way to get one would be to hold a referendum to determine what kind of Brexit the people actually desire.
The 'people' voted for Brexit, trusting parliament and goverment to deliver a Brexit that would make sense. But parliament -whilst taking this as a mandate - is unable to find any kind of Brexit they can agree on. If parliament can't agree, it seems absolutely the democratic thing to ask the people!

"The last referendum gave us the mandate to find ways to leave the EU. These are the possibilities we've worked out with the EU over the last three years. However, parliament can't agree on any of them, so we put it to you, the people, once again. Which one shall it be?

  • TM's deal
  • no deal
  • none of the above (cancel Brexit)."
noodlenosefraggle · 24/05/2019 13:48

The problem with that is that no one really understands what 'no deal'means. It is the easy option for people who are just fed up with the whole thing.

GCAcademic · 24/05/2019 13:50

I feel more sorry for the people whose lives she has ruined. Like those overseas students paying tens of thousands of pounds to U.K. universities in fees, only to be rounded up in vans and deported for the “crime” of having taken an English language test which the Government said was acceptable at the time but later decided wasn’t. Their money and education wasted, and in many cases their families now believing that they are cheats because, well, the U.K. Government just wouldn’t act like that otherwise, would it? That was just one of her many disgusting anti-foreigner acts as Home Secretary and PM.

Dongdingdong · 24/05/2019 13:52

We work in socks care which you would assume would be left leaning.

@TheLastNigel You work in socks care?

tomtom1999xx · 24/05/2019 13:53

Andrea

( sorry! )

EssentialHummus · 24/05/2019 13:55

I don’t think her failures over Brexit should be allowed to overshadow her many other failures.

But, yes, I feel for her personally.

AlwaysCheddar · 24/05/2019 14:08

Glad she’s gone. Don’t give a toss how she feels.

brilliotic · 24/05/2019 14:24

The problem with that is that no one really understands what 'no deal'means. It is the easy option for people who are just fed up with the whole thing.

I guess that seeing as rejecting a no-deal brexit is the only thing that commanded a majority in parliament, this option needn't actually be put to the people. So let me re-phrase:

"The last referendum gave us the mandate to find ways to leave the EU. Parliament, despite being divided on just about everything, has determined that it would not be in the country's best interest to leave the EU without a deal. The government has worked out a deal to leave the EU but MPs haven't supported it. So we are asking you: This is the Brexit we can get (TM's deal), do you want it? If not, we will cancel Brexit.

Topseyt · 24/05/2019 14:41

Brexit is a poisoned chalice. That much is clear.

I am actually amazed that anyone actually wants to line themselves up for the job of delivering it, but apparently they do now, just as they did when TM took office.

I am not a fan of Theresa May. She is not a good negotiator amongst other things. I'm not convinced that any of the other possible candidates will do much better though. Brexit as many people who voted for it seem to have envisaged it seems undeliverable to me (I'm a remainer). Theresa May might not be the last PM to fall on their sword over it.

As a human being I do feel some sympathy for what she has been through, as the bullying and backstabbing reached epic proportions and all must really have been taking a toll. There were plenty of times when I thought that she could not possibly have been enjoying the job. Nobody could. It was impossible.

I have no sympathy for her politics though. I'm not a Tory voter.

Tiredemma · 24/05/2019 14:56

Save my tears and sadness for the millions fucked over by austerity and cruel Tory policy.

Hear hear.

Dongdingdong · 24/05/2019 15:01

If Leave hadn't won it's highly likely that Theresa May would never have had the chance to be PM, as I think David Cameron would probably have carried on until Labour eventually won an election. So I think she probably went for the job knowing that it was now or never - and from all accounts she's always had her eye on the top job.

However, while she did achieve her ambition, she must have been so frustrated that her entire premiership was taken up with Brexit and she basically had no time to devote to anything else.

I do feel very sorry for her on a human level - it's not nice to see somebody in tears. She has also aged so much in the last three years, which shows the insane levels of stress she's been under.

The way her party has treated her is quite despicable and she has handled herself with a lot of dignity throughout.

Intothe · 24/05/2019 15:08

I really think we need a general election. The Tories are too divided. She was trying to herd rats at a crossroads trying to keep her party in line.

Acis · 24/05/2019 15:17

I do feel very sorry for her on a human level - it's not nice to see somebody in tears.

Things that don't make Theresa May cry:
Windrush
Grenfell Tower
Autistic people being locked up for years on end
People dying for lack of NHS treatment
Old people having totally inadequate care
Running a country with appalling mental health provision for children, young people and, well, anyone
Terminally ill people being refused vital benefits
And much, much more.

Things that make Theresa May cry:

Finally being forced out of office months after she should have gone.

Sorry, I'm struggling to feel sorry for her on this one.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 24/05/2019 15:26

Appalling Home Secretary
Appalling Prime Minister

Zero leadership skillls
Zero vision
Zero scruples

Whoever replaces her will make her look great and that’s terrifying too but she had to go she has been an absolute disaster

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 24/05/2019 15:29

@tiredemma I couldn’t agree more
She will slope off to her nice life with pots of cash. Not much keeps that woman up at night except her own deluded egomania

FiremanKing · 24/05/2019 15:30
