Help with dry socket.... Please :(

Had two teeth out last Tuesday and over the weekend developed dry socket which I was trying so hard to avoid - went back to dentist on Monday and had it packed iwth some clove-tasting stuff which gave pretty much immediate relief but woke up yesterday morning with toothache again which has got gradually worse and worse. I'm taking 2 x Solpadeine Max and 2 x Nurofen Plus every 4 hours but it's only just taking the edge off!!

Does anyone have any tried and tested ways to relieve this pain?!

I went back to the GP to have it repacked and I took prescription cocodomal. It's so painful, I feel for you OP!!

I’ve had it and the only way I have got through it is by taking solpadeine max and going back to bed. I fall asleep easily though.

You might have an infection and need antibiotics. Call 111

Have you repacked the hole!

Yep, packed with stuff that looks like tobacco but tastes like clove oil, still got pain!

When I sleep i am convinced that my body heals faster whether it’s a spot, wound or dry socket etc.

It does go so do hold on to that thought as it’s very painful.

Also, I have taken solpadeine max for an abscess for a separate issue and took it for much longer than three days and didn’t become addicted in the slightest.

ValleyoftheHorses · 23/05/2019 18:11

You need to have it repacked again.
Unfortunately dry socket is the pain of dead bone and until your body sorts it out by sequestering off the dead bone, all treatment is palliative.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 23/05/2019 18:23

@FiremanKing the pain is so bad I am not bothered in the slightest if I become addicted to it, that's an issue I'll deal with after the dry socket if I have to! Unfortunately it has 'blocked me up' somewhat over the 10 days I have been taking it, which is pretty uncomfortable.

@ValleyoftheHorses, damn, I was trying to avoid another visit, have been 3 times in the last week already over this, its making me so miserable that I feel tearful and am afraid of making an arse of myself in front of my frankly quite lovely dentist

As dentists we know dry sockets are horrible, we just can’t prevent them- it’s luck! Some people are just prone to them.
So don’t worry- go again. Packing a dry socket is a quick job so we don’t mind. Better tomorrow than over the bank holiday weekend.Flowers

I was told to sleep sitting up but you are going to need to see your dentist again. They won’t judge is you are upset, most dentists understand that tooth pain fucking hurts .

GreenTulips · 23/05/2019 18:51

I had the same last week but was given pain killers and antibiotics

I didn’t take them, but kept them just in case

BlackCatFan · 23/05/2019 18:51

You need to keep having fresh packing put in by the dentist until it heals. This happened to me last year, it was very painful :( I had about 3/4 lots of packing before it healed, took about 3 weeks I think.
You shouldn't be in pain if the packing is in properly. It took the pain away for me immediately.
Good luck xx

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 23/05/2019 18:55

Keep going back to get it packed as often as you need to.
I presume you are getting a local anaesthetic for the packing.
I had the 2 most horrible dry sockets at the same time a few years ago. It was pain like nothing I had ever imagined

My dentist was fantastic and took me almost daily for packing. Just getting the local block was bliss and the packing helped so much.

Good luck, hope they heel quickly
