"School shoe" sandals: why do they not exist?

Every year I struggle to find sturdy sandals that are acceptable with kids' school uniform policy. Why why why is this not a totally standard product?

Or am I missing any? The school is really strict on shoes: they have to be plain black with dark soles. I can barely ever find any that meet this requirement. I get that black isn't summery but I would never countenance wearing full shoes with socks all summer, so I don't understand why Clarks, startrite and so forth don't supply.

Anyone point me in the direction of any I've missed? They will get a letter home if they wear navy or tan rather than black, so that's a no go.

I don’t know but I looked for some to no avail because DD needed new school shoes and a nice pair of black sandals would have been good for summer too. But couldn’t find any with a closed toe at all.

Have a look at saltwater sandals. They do children's sizes and have the requirements you describe.

Maybe because most kids don't wear them. Mine wouldn't because their friends didn't (even at the age of 5) - they all wore shoes instead. The following summer I didn't bother buying them.

Also most schools aren't as strict as yours in terms of permitted sandal colour.

All of this makes it less worthwhile for the shoe companies to manufacture plain black school sandals.

Sorry, not helpful, I know. Maybe ask the other parents at your school where they bought theirs?

Most schools don't allow sandals so there is almost no market for them.

My children's schools don't allow sandals but I wouldn't send them to school in them even if they were allowed. They are completely impractical for running about on the playground and my daughter would probably trip over in them!
