Terribly sad news. Her books have given me and my children a huge amount of pleasure. Absolutely amazing woman.

I only read The Tiger Who Came to Tea as a parent and it's so perfectly pitched- every word is just right. It's my favourite children's book, I'm always suggesting it to my DS. As I will tonight. I often think it's a brilliant example of how to write a really great children's book, and think how talented a writer must be to do that. Love it, RIP Judith.

Seven Stories link has lots of photos of her archive.

It feels appropriate that her death has been announced today when it's the EU elections.

RhubarbIsEvil · 23/05/2019 14:00

I read the mumsnet thread about the Tiger interpretation too! I wonder if I can find it in Search?

hellooosweetheart · 23/05/2019 15:11

Oh no. We love mog. 'Goodbye mog' always makes me cry.

Reallybadidea · 23/05/2019 16:30

I've never been able to bring myself to read Goodbye Mog Sad

I love all of Judith Kerr's books and was incredibly lucky to meet her at a work event a couple of years ago. She was wonderful, so kind, very sprightly & gave a very funny speech when it was her turn.
We do own Goodnight Mog but I've only read it a couple of times as it does make me cry!

BBInGinDrinking · 23/05/2019 17:15

I've only just heard this sad news. Through her wonderful words and illustrations, Judith has long been a joyful part of my life and now my DCs' lives: the whole Mog series including Goodbye, The Tiger, my DCs' cuddly Mogs. Goodbye is especially significant to us. One of those people who you want to live forever, but who actually deserves a good rest now. A long life, well lived. She won't be forgotten.

Yes, she wrote a series, but unlike some other authors it never seemed like she was just churning them out in some money-making machine.

Goodbye Judith, and thank you.

Sitting on a train crying over this:

What sad news, she has left a legacy of some great books. The Tiger Who came to tea and the Mog books will be read forever. We love them.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 23/05/2019 18:11

Awwwww. RIP Judith

Etino · 23/05/2019 18:18

She's with pink rabbit and Mog.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 23/05/2019 18:30

Her wonderful books must have been a massive part of so many mothers on Mumsnet - reading the Mog books all snuggled up with our little ones.
What an amazing legacy to leave the world. Thank you Judith.

merrymouse · 23/05/2019 19:32

Very sad. Tiger Who Came to Tea was my favourite book as a child. I loved the idea of being able to go out in my night clothes to a cafe and the street scene with the No. 9 bus. I have always assumed it was based on the High Street in Barnes - but obviously the Barnes of the 60's and 70's before artisan bread was a thing.

On the other hand how brilliant to live to your 90's and still be drawing every day. Something to aspire to.

leeloo1 · 23/05/2019 19:39

It is dress dreadfully sad news I'm another one who loved The Tiger who Came to Tea as a child and when Hitler stole pink rabbit when I was older. I saw the exhibition about her work at the Bethnal Green childhood museum about 8 years ago, which is how I discovered Mog and bought all those books for my children (bar goodbye Mog) and they've been read soooo many times. Dd has many of the Mog's on cd and listens to it every night at bedtime, while she cuddles her (Ikea) Mog toy.

I hope Judith Kerr is sitting on a sofa with her husband in heaven, and they're smiling at each other and saying "bother that cat!" as Mog's tail swishes to cover the TV screen.

franke · 23/05/2019 19:57

Here's a thread I saved analysing Tiger. There are apparently several on mumsnet.

Such sad news, but what a marvellous life, well-lived. And we'll always have Tiger Smile

missmartini · 23/05/2019 20:03

I told the kids mummy was picking the story tonight and we read the tiger who came to tea. My most favourite book. So sad to hear this news.

IPokeBadgers · 23/05/2019 20:04

I'm a bit tearful about this too but what a wonderful lady and fantastic legacy she has created for generations. I loved When Hitler stole Pink Rabbit as a child, fantastic.
I reckon she's with Mog now.

ChattyLion · 23/05/2019 20:06

She will be missed. Flowers

mrssmiling · 23/05/2019 20:26

Very sad indeed - what an amazing woman, and how much pleasure she has given us all with her wonderful books. Love JassyRadlett's idea of a family supper with sausages and chips and icecream! Love your Mitford name too! I saw that Seven Stories exhibition...I do hope there are lots more exhibitions and events to celebrate her work.

How sad. But what a legacy to leave. So many children with so many happy memories enjoying her stories. I loved Mog as a child and I read it with my toddler DS yesterday.

Coquillage · 23/05/2019 20:56

What a life to have lived

An amazing career
A literary legacy
A happy marriage
A long life including a healthy old age
Doing what she loved right up until the end

Reallybadidea · 23/05/2019 21:31
