Is it Athletics Summer Residential for Year 6 Girls'

or Athletics Summer Residential for Year 6 Girls?

I think the first one, because the residential belongs to the girls but I am now second guessing myself. Mumsnet grammar help needed please?

No it's just girls.

IHeartKingThistle · 23/05/2019 09:22

You don't need an apostrophe - you've covered the possession because you've used the word 'for'

Fantasisa · 23/05/2019 09:23

Thanks! Can you explain why please so I know for next time?

It's the second one - just plural of girls.

It would be the first one if you were saying Girls' Residential, but as you've used 'for' that denotes the posession.

newtlover · 23/05/2019 09:34

you only need to bring the apostrophe in if it's a residential for something belonging to the girls
eg
residential for Year 6 girls' pet dogs

ALongHardWinter · 23/05/2019 16:54

No apostrophe as it's not indicating possession of.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/05/2019 18:10

'The girl's mother..' (One girl)

The girls' mother.' . (More than one girl.)

Unless it's that type of construction, you don't need an apostrophe.
