When the Queen passes away do you think the news will be released straight away?

I get news alerts on my phone. I was with a friend when we both got a news alert, I don’t remember what, and we both wondered if news of the departure of the Queen will be announced like that.
Would Buckingham Palace announce the news straight away to go out on news services immediately or wait for the 6 o’clock news, or whatever?
I did work for the BBC a long time ago and I know that the protocol then was to interrupt the broadcast, but I wonder if Buckingham Palace would hold onto the news until an appropriate time.
I believe it was her father who had his passing hastened so it would make the morning papers.

I don’t wish this to be morbid or royalist/republican. I’m just interested in how the news would be handled. I think it would be very different to that of a regular celebrity.

Check out the Guardian article - think it's called "London Bridge is down" - it's a detailed account of what will happen.

FizzBuzzBangWoof · 22/05/2019 21:53

I imagine it would be breaking news and regardless of what was being shown on BBC1 at the time it would cut to an official announcement by a newsreader

I doubt they would try to keep it hidden for any amount of time. Too high risk of a leak

Lllot5 · 22/05/2019 21:57

I suppose they would tell her family first. Then make an announcement.
I for one am not looking forward to it.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 22/05/2019 21:57

They will interrupt the broadcast program, that I know for sure.
But I was wondering about the news coming out of Buckingham Palace.

Check out the article. Basically the family are informed, then the government, other governments, then the media.

EdithWeston · 22/05/2019 22:00

Yes - Long thread about this in the topic not so long ago.

There will be a very brief embargo (whilst those who need to be told in person can be told) and then the plan goes into action.

It's an event that would be impossible to hold back IYSWIM

Kez200 · 22/05/2019 22:08

The speed might also depend on how. Something expected might be a quicker announcement than a shock departure.

By the way, the Queen will not "pass away", she will die.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 22/05/2019 22:17

How odd a life it must be that you could read all the plans and planned obituaries in the event of your death.

sadbones · 22/05/2019 22:20

@1CarefulLadyOwner why is pass away not acceptable to you?

Passthecherrycoke · 22/05/2019 22:22

I’m not convinced by the guardian article. It’s 2 years old, But also allegedly exposes the secret codes words designed to keep the news secret, so all that would’ve been changed following publication

Also I think BP has become increasingly secretive of late, whereas they always struck me as quite open previously

Justmuddlingalong · 22/05/2019 22:23

At least when it happens, now at least she'll have had the joy of using a Sainsbury's self service check out. 😁

tessiegirl · 22/05/2019 22:23

Pass away means to die...What is wrong with saying pass away?

LarryGreysonsDoor · 22/05/2019 22:24

Thank you Pottering, that was fascinating.

Sorry but I felt that so say she will die is rather crass.
I do not apologise for having a little class and decorum.

Pass away is a perfectly acceptable term, to say someone has passed does get my goat though.

DH tells me there will be a 3 day official mourning period - when schools will be shut.

Anyone know if that is right?

I don't know her, but, I like the Queen. Bet she's a hoot.

ConfCall · 22/05/2019 22:35

I’m not a royalist but I’ll feel strangely sad....makes me realise how quickly time is passing. It doesn’t feel like 15 odd years since her mother died. There are so few folks left now who participated in WW2 - yet I used to know loads at a point that seems very recent (but isn’t!)

EnidButton · 22/05/2019 22:38

I don't like the phrase pass away. It feels too weak a description for the actually death of a person. I also really don't like 'gone to sleep'. That caused a lot of bedtime anxiety as a child after hearing a dead relative described that way. I prefer a straight to the point died.

But plenty of people prefer passed away etc and that's equally valid. I don't think we should police death as it's such a personal thing.

small2018 · 22/05/2019 22:51

I'm the person who started the thread about this ages ago under an old username and it was really interesting! Think it got deleted as it was in Chat!

UrsulaPandress · 22/05/2019 22:54

I much prefer the African 'going home'.

FiremanKing · 22/05/2019 22:59

Died, passed away, popped her clogs, kicked the bucket etc there’s bound to be some who don’t like a particular phrase but that’s their choice and they shouldn’t dictate to others what you can or cannot say!

stucknoue · 22/05/2019 23:01

I've seen some of the arrangements - it will be released simultaneously to news orgs plus others who need to be told, as for how immediate - it will depend on circumstances and whether all close family can be contacted quickly - just like with non famous people they need to know before the rest of us, she's their mother/grandmother etc. No they won't wait for a specific news bulletin, it's about telling family

ThatCurlyGirl · 22/05/2019 23:03

It will be almost instantly announced to press with a very, very short embargo so they can prepare to announce appropriately.

Newspapers, radio stations and large traffic websites have obituaries at the ready for hundreds of high profile figures and celebrities. It's quite morbid!

They'll likely report "rumours of" before the official announcement arrives with them but wouldn't dare to announce as fact until after the embargo - they do work quite closely with palace guidelines still.

They'll be ready for the Queen, supplements, stock footage and key dates - will be all hands on deck in the newsrooms to package and add in the details surrounding her death.

I always say as PR we can plan all we like to get a story out but if the queen dies there will be no chance of any other news making the press for a good week or more. It really will be all hands on deck to package up the news to the public on all platforms.

Goldmandra · 22/05/2019 23:04

What stops?

I assume TV and radio programmes will all just turn into news?

Will MN stop?
