When the Queen passes away do you think the news will be released straight away?

I get news alerts on my phone. I was with a friend when we both got a news alert, I don’t remember what, and we both wondered if news of the departure of the Queen will be announced like that.
Would Buckingham Palace announce the news straight away to go out on news services immediately or wait for the 6 o’clock news, or whatever?
I did work for the BBC a long time ago and I know that the protocol then was to interrupt the broadcast, but I wonder if Buckingham Palace would hold onto the news until an appropriate time.
I believe it was her father who had his passing hastened so it would make the morning papers.

I don’t wish this to be morbid or royalist/republican. I’m just interested in how the news would be handled. I think it would be very different to that of a regular celebrity.

As for official mourning, we weren't told about schools but we've had instructions for all Church of England churches, but I can't remember where we put the assembled stuff! Oh and the printer will be in overdrive reprinting all the references to the queen for king!

ThatCurlyGirl · 22/05/2019 23:06

Will be weird hearing people sing god save the king at big events won't it? I always think loads of people singing it will accidentally say queen out of habit and it'll sound super awkward!

PhannyMcNee · 22/05/2019 23:11

I was talking with friends who are CofE vicars about this and they confirmed they were ‘instructed’ to ensure they had muffles for the Bells ‘ready’ as part of the protocol! This was several years ago too.

RosaWaiting · 22/05/2019 23:19

I often say "passed away" about my dad because he took aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages to die, like he was in the last stage of death for a crazy long time, days of "death rattle".

I obviously wouldn't wish that on anyone but I have now found myself wondering what the Palace would do in that situation - I suppose just say "seriously ill". But the story about the Queen's father really stunned me!

ohfourfoxache · 22/05/2019 23:34

I thought it was the Queen’s grandfather George V whose death was hastened, not George VI? Confused

SaskiaRembrandt · 22/05/2019 23:37

*What stops?

I assume TV and radio programmes will all just turn into news?

Will MN stop?*

When Princess Diana died pretty much all programming was cancelled and it was just coverage of her death, and even when normal programmes resumed, some were changed for reasons of decorum, and there was a ticker with more Diana related news along the bottom of the screen. (Apart form Cartoon Network, they kept the scheduled programming.) I'd guess that when the queen dies it will be the same on terrestrial television, but Netflix, Amazon etc. won't mention it

Mumsnet will still be here, but lots of queen related threads.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 22/05/2019 23:37

You are right OhFour. I was typing from memory.

Family, the government and other officials abroad will be told first, then it will be breaking news.

Intothe · 22/05/2019 23:48

Why, are you plotting her demise?

cheesenpickles · 22/05/2019 23:51

Mentioned this to my dh the other day and his only question was "do we get a day off?" BlushHmm

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 23/05/2019 01:07

I'm reading that someone high profile has died, I'll usually use the term snuffed it. Super classy I am Grin

It'll be strange, all my life it's been the Queen, by the time DC are old enough to understand there's a monarch it'll be King Charles, then King William, then King George...they might only ever know Kings in their life. And yes to pp, getting used to singing the anthem with King in it will be weird for a bit.

Ohnotanothernamechange · 23/05/2019 07:54

I feel quite emotional when I think of the Queen dying, and I'm no Royalist. Shes been the one constant in our lives, and there are so few people left who can remember the time before she ascended to the throne. My DF is 70 and even he can't remember life before her. It's really strange when you think about it.

Ohnotanothernamechange · 23/05/2019 07:59

Also, everything will stop. Someone mentioned muffled church bells. That's only the tip of the iceberg, there will be no comedy broadcast until after her funeral, radio stations will only play sombre music, much like when Diana died, all sporting events including premier league football matches would be cancelled.

BertrandRussell · 23/05/2019 07:59

I favour “joined the choir invisibule”......

PicsInRed · 23/05/2019 08:02

She will be announced as having died.
The royal family don't "pass away" just as they don't eat tea on their settee.

Personally I like "just in, breaking news, the Queen has bought it." I think she'd approve. Grin

ArchieHarrison · 23/05/2019 08:06

Random queendeath fact. If you are organising a major live broadcast event, it will be pulled from air in the event of the queens death. For the past few years therefore, insurance has been available to cover losses in the event of such occurrence. The premium for the policy increases each year with greater likelihood of the risk occurring

BertrandRussell · 23/05/2019 08:09

I reckon it’s reasonably likely that the queen, Philip and Charles will all go in a reasonably short space of time. That’ll be a logistical challenge and a half.....

Hollowvictory · 23/05/2019 08:10

It goes on radio 5 first then other stations simultaneously. We did a tour of the bbc and they let my dd practice ading it out on the radio 😂

Imoen · 23/05/2019 08:22

When it happens, I want to leave the country for a month!

UrsulaPandress · 23/05/2019 08:23

Radio 5? Really.

BertrandRussell · 23/05/2019 08:33

Radio 5? Well, it will be “passed away” then.

NoSauce · 23/05/2019 08:36

There’s nothing wrong with saying died. It doesn’t make you classy or mean that you have decorum because you have said passed away!

Mumtoboy123 · 23/05/2019 08:38

Ive always wondered how this will work. Ive also started to wonder how much longer she can go on for? And Phillip? I remember TV being interupted when the queen mother died so im sure it will be more coverage than that had and i remember that being alot. Will the protocol be similar when phillip dies? I get the impression it will be one then the other shortly after.

hipposarerad · 23/05/2019 08:44

There will be no news reported except that an elderly woman has finally turned her toes up. Then there will be interminable wafflings about her life and 'achievements' and it will present an opportunity for any politician who has some unpopular news to bury, because we will hear of nothing else for at least a week.

x2boys · 23/05/2019 08:56

The Queen mother lived to over 100,Mum,how old is the Queen now 93,94,Realistically she could still live for another 5/6 years.
