When the Queen passes away do you think the news will be released straight away?

I get news alerts on my phone. I was with a friend when we both got a news alert, I don’t remember what, and we both wondered if news of the departure of the Queen will be announced like that.
Would Buckingham Palace announce the news straight away to go out on news services immediately or wait for the 6 o’clock news, or whatever?
I did work for the BBC a long time ago and I know that the protocol then was to interrupt the broadcast, but I wonder if Buckingham Palace would hold onto the news until an appropriate time.
I believe it was her father who had his passing hastened so it would make the morning papers.

I don’t wish this to be morbid or royalist/republican. I’m just interested in how the news would be handled. I think it would be very different to that of a regular celebrity.

An acquaintance of mine used to be a BBC radio presenter, and said that one of the tasks she had to go through before starting the job was a practice run at announcing the Queen's death. Apparently all the presenters had to prove that they were able to announce this in a suitable manner at short notice, because you never knew who would be on shift when it happened and any programme might be interrupted for it.

A celebrity guest was in the studio at the time and tried to distract her by stripping his clothes off outside the glass window and doing a little naked dance, but she still managed to get through it.

When the Queen dies, and Charles comes to the throne, if he died before Camilla, would she be known as Camilla, Queen Mother ?

Just Duchess of Cornwall, I believe. Didn't it emerge she couldn't/wouldn't be Queen, but Queen Consort anyway ?

MorrisZapp · 23/05/2019 17:09

I'm not convinced we can use Diana level coverage as a precedent. Diana was a young woman with kids who died unexpectedly in extremely questionable circumstances.

The Queen is an old lady. She is going to die soon and nobody will be shocked or surprised. Nor will there be revelations about her connections and private life, or concern for her young children.

BertrandRussell · 23/05/2019 17:13

She won’t be Queen, will she? Will she be The Duchess of Cornwall, Queen Consort?

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 23/05/2019 17:13

If Charles died now Camilla would be The Dowager Duchess of Cornwall. If he dies after the Queen she would be the Dowager Queen Camilla or the Dowager Princess Consort. But they might make something else up as it doesn’t sound great!

DGRossetti · 23/05/2019 17:16

Unlike Diana, the reign of her madge is baked into the DNA of the UK. I was born in her reign. I may even die in it (although I hope not). My DS was born under her reign and like me and DW that's all he knows.

It will be a significant moment in the UKs collective consciousness.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/05/2019 17:29

I think there will be an even larger outpouring of grief, much more than Diana's.

Everything will stop, there will be probably be millions of mourners in London.

She is an incredibly important figure, she is all we remember, all the 2 generations above me remember. She's lived through an amazing period of history and is arguably the most important monarch we've ever had.

When she dies it will be the passing of history - practically no one remembers having a King. Even singing "god save the King" will feel completely weird.

Literally living history.

DGRossetti · 23/05/2019 17:38

Oh, lawks, I hope we dump that dirge.

Luckily the UK has no official national anthem - it's by tradition. So I hope the one thing Charles does is to suggest that one of his favourite composers - Parry - gets the gig with "Jerusalem". Maybe with a modification to say "Britain" rather than "England" (although as historians have noted, in the past England was used to mean Britain).

Afreet · 23/05/2019 17:58

Seriously? Compared to many of the monarchs of the past, she's done precisely nothing other than dutifully keep her mouth shut in public, preserve the monarchy long after it should have been quietly retired as an embarrassment, and act as a focus of (largely imaginary) national unity. And not be a Nazi like her uncle, which is not nothing.

And half the royal enthusiasts are confusing her with Helen Mirren or Claire Foy, anyway. And will probably go on confusing her with Olivia Coleman, National Treasure.

People die. They don’t pass away, pass over or pass
A police officer told me that my 16 year old son was ‘ just in another room’. No mate he’s actually totally dead and certainly not next door

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/05/2019 19:01

She won’t be Queen, will she? Will she be The Duchess of Cornwall, Queen Consort?

The wife of a king automatically becomes Queen Consort, since she's not a sovereign in her own right. They could choose for her to remain a duchess instead, but I don't see Charles going for that - and as we've seen so often, what Charles wants Charles expects to get

The fly in the ointment is the legal report into the validity of their "marriage" which was produced at the time and which Charles has had sealed during his lifetime. Only time will tell if anyone will want to mount a challenge around that ...

holdupthere · 23/05/2019 19:39

God save the king will be odd BUT even odder will be all the new stamps with him on!
And the bank notes! Ooh can we petition to make them the old paper notes again rather than the slippery shiny ones?!

StormcloakNord · 23/05/2019 19:47

I hope the schools dont bloody close on account of someone dying. My MD is vehemently anti-royalist so theres zero chance of a day off for us. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Nacreous · 23/05/2019 19:59

I'm pretty sure there are two additional public holidays when the queen dies: one the day after her death, and one on the day of the funeral. I don't think they're optional holidays really, but I'm not certain.

Aragog · 23/05/2019 20:09

I suspect at least the day of the funeral will be a proper national day of mourning, and most places will be shut much like it is on Christmas Day and Easter. Im not sure if individual companies will get to make the decision themselves.

Although technically entitled to sue the title Queen, Queen Consort in full, I thought it had already been announced that Camilla, with Charles, had decided not to use this. Just like she doesn't use the title Princess of Wales, though she is entitled too. I thought she was going to be using the title Princess Consort. However, whilst I think that was announced after their marriage, they can still change their mind and decide to use Queen Consort if they choose. They may have decided that the public have warmed more to her and choose the normal title I guess, or maybe not.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/05/2019 21:06

Wasn't there a £5 coin produced for his 70th birthday? I'd try to produce a link but am working on a new tablet and am not too familiar with it yet Blush

I remember coins with the King on too.

But if course they are all Old Money

There has never been a decimal coin with any other monarch

LarryGreysonsDoor · 25/05/2019 00:19

No but shillings and two shillings were used alongside decimal until the 90s.

I was welling up just reading the article. In my opinion she is a remarkable lady.

A PP has made a very good point that it is unlikely any of our children will ever see another Queen, it’ll be Kings for at least what 80 years after that?

ForalltheSaints · 25/05/2019 09:59

I hope that this is a discussion about something that is several or many years away. It will be the end of an era and I am sure that there will be much mourning.

Her Majesty might have to be meeting Boris Johnson next month (hope not).

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/05/2019 10:08

I bet she's MIGHTY pissed off. Imagine ending a glorious reign with Doris as PM and Trump as President?

She's just going to have to keep on living.
