Ok I'm a sahp to 3 kids. Youngest is a 16m old. We need just a little bit of income. It will help with a few things here and there.
We get by but just a little bit of more money will help.

Anyway I'm stuck as to what to do for jobs.

I have been offered a 3 day a week, school hours job. Baby would need to go nursery. Older kids in school.

Or

A Saturday job working the whole day. 9-5.30.

Both scenarios bring in literally the same money.

Which one should I do. There's pros and cons to both!

Who would have the dc on a Saturday?

RushIt · 22/05/2019 10:26

Dp will have the kids as he's at home.

I'd rather do school hours...assuming that it brings in the same money after you pay for nursery fees.

I’d take the school hours job. I’m assuming once your youngest qualifies for free hours or starts school, you’ll be better off.

Astrid0208 · 22/05/2019 10:26

If you've got a partner or grandparent to do free childcare on Saturday then that seems to make most sense. I'd rather do one day and get it over with too.

RushIt · 22/05/2019 10:27

Yes it brings in slightly more after nursery fees

RushIt · 22/05/2019 10:28

Astrid0208 exactly get it over with I was thinking but I think baby could really do with nursery. She loves going out and drives me crazy in the house!

I would do the school hours because once youngest is 3 nursery hours will be free

Apileofballyhoo · 22/05/2019 10:29

Does either job have any prospects of something better in the long term when the DC are older? E.g. 5 days a week school hours when they are all at school?

My heart would say Saturday so baby doesn't have to go to nursery yet, if baby was a few months older I'd go with the other job definitely.

I think the week day job is better really.

raeray · 22/05/2019 10:29

Yes I'd pick Saturday job too if in your position OP.
Is there options for more hours in the future with Saturday job (say week day hours when youngest gets nursery hours?)

RushIt · 22/05/2019 10:30

But I love spending time on the weekends with my dp and kids as a family as dp works long hours during the week and hardly even have evenings together.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 22/05/2019 10:31

I would prefer to spend weekends with family too.

EvaHarknessRose · 22/05/2019 10:32

School hours one.

RushIt · 22/05/2019 10:33

Apileofballyhoo yes the school hours job will be able to offer me more hours in the future I'm sure and definitely good for progression as it's what I did pre kids so I'll be getting the experience. Saturday job is more customer base type job but isn't retail.

OP posts:
Apileofballyhoo · 22/05/2019 10:35

If baby loves going out definitely do the weekday one!

Apileofballyhoo · 22/05/2019 10:37

Saw your second update, definitely definitely 100% go for the weekday one! Experience, possibly a full time job when the DC are older, better off when they are all at school, go for it!

RushIt · 22/05/2019 10:40

I think school hours won by 5-2!

OP posts:
CathyorClaire · 22/05/2019 10:41

I'd hedge my bets and do both.

amusedbush · 22/05/2019 10:41

The weekday one sounds much more promising in terms of experience and progression so I'd do that. It keeps one foot in the door for when the children are older.

RushIt · 22/05/2019 10:44

CathyorClaire haha yes I could do both!

OP posts:
RushIt · 22/05/2019 10:48

Ok I think you're right for long term gain it makes sense. Job won't start till 2m time so baby will be 18m. I'll just need to stick it out for 18m before free nursery kicks in.

OP posts:
Damntheman · 22/05/2019 10:49

I would assume the other parent would have them on the saturday.

OP I would choose the school hours job. Weekend time is so precious and nursery will do your baby good in the long run in terms of socialising and making the transition to school easier.

Damntheman · 22/05/2019 10:51

My kids started nursery at 11 and 13 months old respectively. This is totally normal in Norway. 16/18 months old is no trouble at all for starting nursery!

mejon · 22/05/2019 10:51

Is the school hours one term-time only? If not, how will you cover school holidays? I did Saturdays and Sundays when I went back to work to avoid the problem of having to cover holidays. I've since changed to Saturdays and Mondays so it means only covering one day during the holidays which I share with DH.

RushIt · 22/05/2019 11:25

mejon I actually worked when I was pregnant with little one and we managed ok. it would be a mixture of taking holidays me and dp plus we have family that can do the odd day here and there and dp can work from home. The older kids can manage playing and keeping themselves busy. But baby would be in nursery the whole year as she is such hard work!
