Possible chicken pox on holiday

More a WWYD:

On holiday with 3mo and 3yo (and DH). Flight yesterday was cancelled due to strikes so we are already in a bit of a predicament. We have been given flights home tomorrow and are currently trying to entertain 2 kids in a shoe box hotel room in the middle of nowhere.

Yesterday 3yo came out in spots. The local Dr took a look (he happened to be at a local pharmacy) and cannot decide whether it's chicken pox or a reaction to mosquito bites (husband has also been bitten, I haven't). DS is under the weather but could also be over tired- we've had a lot of late nights.

Do we:

A) go back to a Dr for confirmation one way or the other and if it is CP stay in a hotel room for a week (DH would have to fly home alone due to starting a new job), so would be me alone with 2 small kids so would have to take 3yo to supermarket etc.

B) put long sleeve clothes and trousers on 3yo, presume it's mosquito bites and just get on the plane?

C) something else?

We have insurance but they won't cover lost earnings etc and we have to pay out and claim back.

Just remembered you said you are bf DC2. Hopefully that'll give him enough immunity to dodge it. Fingers crossed for you

Fingers crossed, but it didn't work for my DD.

Oh OP, you poor thing. Chicken pox is miserable enough at the best of times, in your own home with food deliveries, Amazon Prime and all your own comforts! Stuck where you are sounds like a nightmare, so glad to read your lovely DH is coming to get you! And hurray for neighbours with Calpol :) Fingers crossed for a smooth journey home for you Xxx

PollyShelby · 24/05/2019 23:52

Your DH sounds lovely, mine would come get us too.

I hope you get back safely

He is PollyShelby. He's just having a kip somewhere south of Paris. 10 hours to go.

Hope you all get home safely 😊

Had an awful night with DS. He was just crying in pain until he fell in to a fitful sleep. Thank God DC2 is a great sleeper and slept through it all.

Running on empty today.

@Hmmmbop

Sorry to hear that, OP. Chickenpox is awful- if I have another child I'll be vaccinating them against it as early as possible. (That was the plan for DD too, but she caught it before she was old enough for the vaccine). I don't want to alarm you at all, but be vigilant, as chickenpox can have life-threatening complications such as encephalitis and sepsis, so Google the symptoms so you know what to watch for. Remember, you've got this. Much love.

And if you need a pick me up, go to youtube and look for a 'Greatest Showman- this is me' parody called 'I am Mom'. I'd link to it, but my phone will delete my post if I attempt to leave the page.

OP you have a pretty wonderful DH!

Think how amazing it will be when you get through the front door of your home. I hope you have an OK journey and let us know how you get on.

Cleanmywindows · 25/05/2019 19:38

Oh God OP, this sounds so awful. I have similar age DC, and we've recently had a round of cp but just in our own home. I truly cannot imagine how awful this must have been for you. You are a stronger person than me for having dealt with it this far. You have my deepest, deepest sympathy and my sincere best wishes for the least painful possible drive home.

Hmmmbop · 25/05/2019 20:17

I can't say I'm relishing the journey home to be honest but it's better than staying here a week by myself.

If DH had been able to stay, or we could have flown someone out I think I'd have happily stayed. It's lovely here and reasonably priced and we could explore a bit more of Italy, but with DH literally just starting a new job and no one able to join me it's just isolating and lonely.

DS is a bit better today, most have scabbed over, just a few still coming out and he doesn't seem as itchy.

I hope your home soon OP, everything is harder when your not in your own bed Flowers

heyyy · 26/05/2019 12:50

Hope your journey home wasn't too traumatic xx

seven201 · 26/05/2019 14:50

So glad you're nearly or already on your way HOME! If dc2 doesn't get it consider getting the vaccination privately. My dd had hers recently and it was £96 total (2 doses).

Cleanmywindows · 26/05/2019 18:59

Hope you have made some headway on your journey home OP and glad to hear your ds isn't feeling so bad.

Hmmmbop · 26/05/2019 22:34

Over half way now. In a hotel in the middle of France for tonight. The kids have amazing considering we've done 9 hours in the car plus stops. Unfortunately similar results again tomorrow but then home. The scenery has been spectacular, definitely a drive worth doing!

This WILL make a good dinner party story in the future. I'm glad you are on your way home. Bravo DH.

mummyhaschangedhername · 27/05/2019 12:31

Are you home OP? Did insurance cover the hire costs?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 27/05/2019 13:15

You'll laugh about this one day op I'm sure Grin
Hope the journey is not too horrific

Hmmmbop · 27/05/2019 13:56

Not home yet. Almost on the ferry. Then 6 or so hours driving on the other side. Home around midnight I'd guess.

OP you are a bloody hero! And your DH too, so heart-warming to read a story where the DH is a decent man instead of a prick :) I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, what an absolute nightmare!

Hope the last leg of the trip goes easy and your poor DC is feeling better.

Frazzled2207 · 27/05/2019 14:09

Golly what a story. Hope you are ok and back home tonight x

0hT00dles · 28/05/2019 12:39

Been following this and just remembered about you as we’ve got a message to say a child we were with yesterday has chickenpox. Think we’re now going to get our 2 dd’s vaccinated as it’s thanks to the info on this thread-I didn’t realise they could be vaccinated if exposed.

Just waiting on my dr to call me back. We’ve a busy few weeks with ballet exams and school trips (first one!) and I don’t fancy having a 16 month old with them. Neither my dh or I have had them either.

So thanks for the info and hope you got home safe OP!
